The people refused the Lord’s laws and his Agreement that he made with their ancestors. They refused to listen to the Lord’s warnings. They worshiped idols [208] that were worth nothing and they themselves became worth nothing. They lived like the people in the nations around them. They did those bad things. And the Lord had warned the people of Israel. The Lord told them not to do those bad things.


Moses and Aaron were some of his priests.\par And Samuel was one of the men\par who called on his name.\par They prayed to the Lord,\par and he answered them.\par


Take bunches of hyssop [71] and dip them in the bowls filled with blood. Paint the blood on the sides and tops of the door frames. No one must leave his house until morning.


You must collect the blood from these animals. Put the blood on the top and sides of the door frames of the houses where the people eat this meal.


Then Moses held the bowls full of the blood from the sacrifices. [158] Moses threw that blood on the people. He said, “This blood shows that the Lord has made a special Agreement with you. The laws God gave you explain the Agreement.”


Kill that ram and save the blood. Throw the blood against the altar [271] on all four sides.


Kill that ram and save some of its blood. Put that blood on the right earlobes of Aaron and his sons. Also put some of the blood on the thumbs of their right hands. And put some of the blood on the big toes of their right feet. Then throw blood against all four sides of the altar.


It will not be like the Agreement I made with their ancestors. {\cf2\super [260]} I made that Agreement when I took them by the hand and brought them out of Egypt. I was their Master, but they broke that Agreement.” This message is from the Lord.


The person must kill the animal on the north side of the altar [6] in front of the Lord. Then Aaron’s sons, the priests, must sprinkle the animal’s blood on the altar, all around it.


“The person must kill the young bull in front of the Lord. Then Aaron’s sons, the priests, must bring the blood to the altar [4] near the entrance of the Meeting Tent [5] and sprinkle the blood on the altar, all around it.


The person must put his hand on the animal’s head and kill the animal at the entrance of the Meeting Tent. [16] Then Aaron’s sons, the priests, must sprinkle the blood on the altar, [17] all around it.


He must put his hand on the animal’s head and kill the animal in front of the Meeting Tent. [18] Then Aaron’s sons must sprinkle the animal’s blood on the altar, [19] all around it.


The priest must put his finger in the blood and sprinkle the blood seven times before the Lord in front of the curtain of the {Most} Holy Place. [26]


In the same way, after they ate, Jesus took the cup of wine. Jesus said, “This wine shows the new agreement \{from God to his people\}. This new agreement begins with my blood (death). When you drink this, do it to remember me.”


And through Christ, God was happy to bring all things back to himself again—things on earth and things in heaven. God made peace by using Christ’s blood (death) on the cross.


You have come to Jesus—the One that brought the new agreement {\cf2\super [168]} from God to his people. You have come to the sprinkled blood {\cf2\super [169]} that tells us about better things than the blood of Abel. {\cf2\super [170]}


It will not be like the agreement\par that I gave to their fathers.\par That is the agreement I gave\par when I took them by the hand\par and led them out of Egypt.\par They did not continue following the agreement I gave them,\par and I turned away from them,\par says the Lord.\par


It is the same with the first agreement \{between God and his people\}. There had to be blood (death) before the agreement could be made good.


First, Moses {\cf2\super [111]} told all the people every commandment in the law. Then Moses took the blood of calves and mixed it with water. Then he used red wool and a branch of hyssop {\cf2\super [112]} to sprinkle the blood and water on the book of the law and on all the people.


In the same way, Moses sprinkled the blood on the Holy Tent. {\cf2\super [114]} He sprinkled the blood over all the things used in worship.


But you were bought with the precious blood (death) of Christ—a pure and perfect lamb.


God planned long ago to choose you by making you his holy people. {\cf2\super [2]} Making you holy is the Spirit’s {\cf2\super [3]} work. God wanted you to obey him and to be made clean by the blood (death) of Jesus Christ. Grace (kindness) and peace be yours more and more.
