So the people of Israel began their journeys. They left the Sinai desert and traveled until the cloud stopped in the desert of Paran.

You are the people that received the law \{of Moses\}. God gave you this law through his angels. But you don’t obey this law!”

The old agreement {\cf2\super [10]} (the law) that brought death was written with words on stone. {\cf2\super [11]} It came with \{God’s\} glory. The face of Moses {\cf2\super [12]} was so bright with glory that the people of Israel (the Jews) could not continue looking at his face. And that glory later disappeared.

This is what I mean: That old agreement judged people guilty of sin, but it had glory. So surely the new agreement that makes people right with God has much greater glory.

But people who depend on following the law \{to make them right\} are under a curse. Why? Because the Scriptures say, “A person must do all the things that are written in the law. {\cf2\super [28]} If he does not always obey, then that person is under a curse!” {\cf2\super [29]}

So what was the law {\cf2\super [39]} for? The law was given to show the wrong things people do. The law would continue until the special Descendant of Abraham came. This is the Descendant mentioned in the promise. \{The promise came directly from God.\} But the law was given through angels. The angels used \{Moses for\} a mediator {\cf2\super [40]} to give the law to people.

This true story makes a picture for us. The two women are like the two agreements (covenants) between God and his people. One agreement is \{the law that God made\} on Mount Sinai. {\cf2\super [55]} The people who are under this agreement are like slaves. The mother named Hagar is like that agreement.

{Moses said,} “The Lord gave these commands to all of you when you were together there at the mountain. The Lord spoke with a loud voice that came from the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness. After he gave us these commands, he didn’t say any more. He wrote his words on two stone tablets and gave them to me.

And God will give peace to you people who are troubled. And he will give peace to us. God will give us this help when the Lord Jesus is shown to us. Jesus will come from heaven with his powerful angels.

They did not want to hear the command: “If anything, even an animal, touches the mountain, it must be killed with stones.” {\cf2\super [162]}

The teaching (the law) that God spoke through angels was shown to be true. And every time the \{Jewish\} people did something against that teaching they were punished for what they did. They were punished when they did not obey that teaching.

Then I looked, and I heard the voices of many angels. The angels were around the throne, the \{four\} living things, and the elders. {\cf2\super [47]} There were thousands and thousands of angels—there were 10,000 times 10,000.
