21 They made me jealous with {demons} that aren’t gods. They made me angry with those worthless idols. So I will make them jealous with people that are not a real nation. I will make them angry with people that are a foolish [213] nation.

The people of Judah also sinned {and did} things that the Lord said were wrong. The people did more things to make the Lord angry at them. These people were worse than their fathers that lived before them.


But you have done many great sins. Your sins are much worse than the sins of any person that ruled before you. You have quit following me. You made idols and other gods. This has made me very angry.


This happened because of all the sins of Baasha and his son, Elah. They sinned and caused the people of Israel to sin. The Lord was angry because they had many idols.


He did all the same sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat did. Jeroboam caused the people of Israel to sin. So they made the Lord, the God of Israel, very angry. The Lord was angry because they worshiped worthless idols.


The Israelites burned incense [203] there in all those places of worship. They did these things like the nations that the Lord forced out of the land before them. The Israelites did evil things that made the Lord angry.


The people refused the Lord’s laws and his Agreement that he made with their ancestors. They refused to listen to the Lord’s warnings. They worshiped idols [208] that were worth nothing and they themselves became worth nothing. They lived like the people in the nations around them. They did those bad things. And the Lord had warned the people of Israel. The Lord told them not to do those bad things.


Manasseh sacrificed his own son and burned him on the altar. [255] Manasseh used different ways of trying to know the future. He visited mediums [256] and wizards. [257]


The people of Judah left me and have burned incense [274] to other gods. They made me very angry. They made many idols. [275] That is why I will show my anger against this place. My anger will be like a fire that can’t be stopped!’


I hate people who worship false gods.\par I trust only in the Lord.\par


The people of Israel built high places {\cf2\super [453]} \par and made God angry.\par They built statues of false gods\par and made God very jealous.\par


Those people are in front of me always making me angry. Those people offer sacrifices {\cf2\super [466]} and burn incense {\cf2\super [467]} in their special gardens. {\cf2\super [468]}


All the people of the other nations are stupid and foolish.\par Their teachings come from worthless wooden statues.\par


Foreign idols don’t have the power\par to bring rain.\par The sky does not have the power\par to send showers of rain down.\par You are our only hope.\par You are the One who made all these things.”\par


But my people have forgotten about me.\par They make offerings to worthless idols.\par My people stumble in the things they do.\par They stumble about in the old paths\par of their ancestors. {\cf2\super [153]} \par My people would rather walk\par along back roads and poor highways,\par than to follow me on the good roads.\par


Has any nation ever stopped worshiping their old gods so they could worship\par new gods?\par No! And their gods are not really gods at all!\par But my people\par stopped worshiping their glorious God\par and started worshiping idols\par that are worth nothing.\par


\{God said,\}\par “Judah, give me one good reason\par why I should forgive you.\par Your children have abandoned me.\par They made promises to idols\par And those idols are not really gods!\par I gave your children everything they needed.\par But they still were unfaithful to me!\par They spent much time with prostitutes.\par


This is what the people of Judah are doing: The children gather wood. The fathers use the wood to make a fire. The women make the dough and make cakes of bread to offer to the Queen of Heaven. {\cf2\super [62]} Those people of Judah pour out drink offerings to worship other gods. They do this to make me angry.


Listen to my people.\par Everywhere in this country\par people are crying for help.\par They say,\par “Is the Lord still at Zion {\cf2\super [74]} ?\par Is Zion’s King still there?”\par


Then I saw something that looked like an arm. The arm reached out and grabbed me by the hair on my head. Then the wind {\cf2\super [60]} lifted me into the air. And in God’s vision, {\cf2\super [61]} he took me to Jerusalem. He took me to the inner gate—the gate that is on the north side. The statue that makes God jealous is by that gate.


“\{In the future,\} the number of the people of Israel will be like the sand of the sea. You can’t measure the sand or count it. Then it will happen that in the place where it was said to them, ‘You are not my people,’ it will be said to them, ‘You are the children of the living God.’


“Some people worship useless idols.\par But those statues never help them. {\cf2\super [12]} \par


After I began my speech, the Holy Spirit {\cf2\super [223]} came on them the same as he (the Spirit) came on us at the beginning. {\cf2\super [224]}


“Men, why are you doing these things? We are not gods! We have the same feelings as you have! We came to tell you the Good News. {\cf2\super [290]} We are telling you to turn away from these worthless things. Turn to the true living God. He is the One who made the sky, the earth, the sea, and everything that is in them.


Again I ask, “Did the people of Israel {\cf2\super [112]} not understand?” Yes, they did understand. First, Moses says this \{for God\}:


Like the Scripture {\cf2\super [90]} says in \{the book of\} Hosea:


Doing that would make the Lord jealous {\cf2\super [75]} ! And we don’t want to do that, do we? No, because he is much stronger than we are.


The Lord’s people made him jealous— They worshiped other gods! They worshiped those horrible idols. And that made God angry.


They offered sacrifices to demons that were not real gods. Those were new gods that they did not know. Those were new gods that your ancestors did not know.


Idols are only statues—they can’t help you! So don’t worship them. Idols can’t help you or save you. They are nothing!
