Daniel 9:5

This happened because the Israelites did not obey the Lord their God. They broke the Lord’s Agreement. They did not obey all the things that Moses the Lord’s servant commanded. The people of Israel would not listen to the Lord’s Agreement, or do the things it taught them to do.

Why? Because my people did the things that I said were wrong. They have made me angry with them since the day their ancestors [264] came up out of Egypt.

We sinned just like our ancestors {\cf2\super [553]} sinned.\par We were wrong, we did bad things!\par

Lord, you are my teacher\par so I will not stop obeying your laws.\par

I wandered away like a lost sheep.\par Come looking for me, Lord.\par I am your servant,\par and I have not forgotten your commands.\par

Why? Because I obeyed the Lord!\par I did not sin against my God.\par

But \{even after he did this,\} all of us wandered away like sheep. We all went our own way. \{We did this after\} the Lord \{freed us from our guilt and\} put all our guilt on him.

We sinned and turned against the Lord.\par We turned away from him and left him.\par We planned evil things.\par We planned things that are against God.\par We have thought of these things\par and planned them in our hearts.\par

Your people never really listened to you.\par Your people never really heard\par the things you said.\par No person has ever seen a God like you.\par There is no other God—only you.\par If people are patient\par and wait for you to help them,\par then you will do great things for them.\par

Lord, we know that we are evil people.\par We know that our ancestors {\cf2\super [125]} did bad things.\par Yes, we sinned against you.\par

“We know that those things are our fault.\par We are now suffering because of our sins.\par Lord, do something to help us for the good of your name.\par We admit that we left you many times.\par We have sinned against you.\par

Let us lie down in our shame.\par Let our shame cover us like a blanket.\par We have sinned against the Lord our God.\par We and our fathers have sinned.\par We have not obeyed the Lord our God\par

You became friends with many nations.\par But those nations don’t care about you.\par Your ‘friends’ have forgotten you.\par I hurt you like an enemy.\par I punished you very hard.\par I did this because of your great guilt.\par I did this because of your many sins.\par

Those places were destroyed because the people living in them did evil things. Those people gave sacrifices to other gods — and that made me angry! Your people and your ancestors {\cf2\super [353]} did not worship those gods in the past.

Now Jerusalem says,\par “I refused to listen to the Lord.\par So the Lord is right for doing these things.\par So listen, all you people!\par Look at my pain!\par My young women and men\par have gone into captivity.\par

“Look at me, Lord. I am in distress!\par My insides are upset!\par My heart feels like it has turned\par upside down inside me!\par My heart feels this way\par because I have been so stubborn!\par In the streets, the sword killed my children.\par Inside the houses, death was there.\par

Let us say to him,\par “We have sinned and have been stubborn.\par Because of this, you haven’t forgiven us.\par

The people \{of Jerusalem\} rebelled against my commands. They were worse than any of the other nations! They broke more of my laws than any of the people in the countries around them. They refused to listen to my commands! They did not obey my laws!”

Then those survivors {\cf2\super [50]} will be taken prisoners. They will be forced to live in other countries. But those survivors will remember me. I broke their spirit. {\cf2\super [51]} They will hate themselves for the bad things they did. In the past, they turned away from me and left me. They chased after their filthy idols. They were like a woman leaving her husband and running after some other man. They did many terrible things.

None of the people of Israel obeyed your teachings. They all have turned away. They did not obey you. There are curses {\cf2\super [101]} and promises written in the Law of Moses. (Moses was God’s servant.) Those curses and promises tell about the punishment for not obeying the law—and all those things have happened to us. Those things happened to us because we sinned against the Lord.

“Lord, our God, you used your power and brought us out of Egypt. We are your people. You are famous because of that even today. Lord, we have sinned. We have done terrible things.

“But Lord, you are kind. You forgive people for the bad things they do. And we really turned against you.

This was the Lord’s first message to Hosea. The Lord said, “Go, marry a prostitute {\cf2\super [1]} that has had children as a result of her prostitution. Why? Because the people in this country have acted like prostitutes—they have been unfaithful to the Lord.”

But you never obeyed my laws. Even your ancestors stopped following me. Come back to me, and I will come back to you.” The Lord All-Powerful said these things.

So, brothers and sisters, be careful that none of you is sinful, and refuses to believe, and stops following the living God.
