Amos 1:9 - Easy To Read Version

9 The Lord says these things: “I will definitely punish \{the people of\} Tyre {\cf2\super [18]} for the many crimes they did. {\cf2\super [19]} Why? Because they took an entire nation and sent them as slaves to Edom. {\cf2\super [20]} They did not remember the agreement they had made with their brothers (Israel).

Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David. Hiram also sent cedar trees, carpenters and stonemasons. They built a house for David.


I made all the kings of Tyre and Sidon drink from the cup.


Why? Because the time has come\par to destroy all the Philistine people\par The time has come to destroy\par Tyre and Sidon’s remaining helpers.\par The Lord will destroy the Philistine people.\par He will destroy the survivors\par from the Island of Crete. {\cf2\super [373]} \par


The word of the Lord came to me again. He said,


And all your wealth will spill into the sea.\par Your wealth—\par the things you buy and sell—\par will spill into the sea.\par Your whole crew—\par sailors, pilots, and the men who\par put caulking {\cf2\super [230]} between the boards\par on your ship—\par will spill into the sea.\par The merchants {\cf2\super [231]} and soldiers in your city,\par will all sink into the sea.\par That will happen on the day\par that you are destroyed!\par


The word of the Lord came to me. He said,


You did many wrong things.\par You were a very crooked businessman.\par In this way, you made the holy places unclean.\par So I brought fire from inside you.\par It burned you!\par You burned to ashes on the ground.\par Now everyone can see your shame.\par


The Lord says these things: “I will definitely punish \{the people of\} Edom {\cf2\super [21]} for the many crimes they did. {\cf2\super [22]} Why? Because Edom chased his brother (Israel) with the sword. Edom showed no mercy. Edom’s anger continued forever—he kept tearing and tearing \{at Israel like a wild animal\}.


The Lord says this: “I will definitely punish \{the people of\} Gaza {\cf2\super [12]} for the many crimes they did. {\cf2\super [13]} Why? Because they took an entire nation of people and sent them as slaves to Edom. {\cf2\super [14]}


A message from God. This is the Lord’s message against Hadrach’s country and his capital city, Damascus. “The family groups of Israel are not the only people that know about God. Everyone looks to him for help. {\cf2\super [23]}


Jesus said, “It will be bad for you Chorazin. {\cf2\super [145]} It will be bad for you Bethsaida. {\cf2\super [146]} I did many miracles in you. If those same miracles had happened in Tyre and Sidon, {\cf2\super [147]} then those people in Tyre and Sidon would have changed their lives a long time ago. Those people would have worn sackcloth {\cf2\super [148]} and put ashes on themselves to show that they were sorry for their sins.


But I tell you, on the day of judgment it will be worse for you than for Tyre and Sidon.


“It will be bad for you, Chorazin {\cf2\super [181]} ! It will be bad for you, Bethsaida {\cf2\super [182]} ! I did many miracles {\cf2\super [183]} in you. If those same miracles had happened in Tyre and Sidon, {\cf2\super [184]} then the people in those cities would have changed their lives and stopped sinning a long time ago. They would have worn sackcloth {\cf2\super [185]} and put ashes on themselves to show that they were sorry for their sins.


But on the judgment day it will be worse for you than for Tyre and Sidon.
