But the people would not listen. They were very stubborn like their ancestors. [207] Their ancestors did not believe the Lord their God.


Don’t be stubborn like your ancestors {\cf2\super [364]} were. But obey the Lord with a willing heart. Come to the Most Holy Place. {\cf2\super [365]} The Lord has made the Most Holy Place to be holy forever. Serve the Lord your God. Then the Lord’s fearful anger will turn away from you.


But those people, our ancestors, {\cf2\super [52]} \par became proud.\par They became stubborn.\par They refused to obey your commands.\par


You were very patient with our ancestors.\par You let them mistreat you for many years.\par You warned them with your Spirit.\par You sent the prophets to warn them.\par But our ancestors {\cf2\super [58]} didn’t listen.\par So you gave them to people in other countries.\par


If the people teach their God’s commands\par to their children,\par then the children will not be like\par their ancestors. {\cf2\super [444]} \par Their ancestors turned against God.\par They refused to obey him.\par Those people were stubborn.\par They were not loyal to God’s Spirit.\par


The Lord said to Moses, “I have seen these people. I know that they are very stubborn people. They will always turn against me.


So go to the land filled with many good things. [331] But I will not go with you. You people are very stubborn, {and you make me very angry}. If I go with you, I might destroy you along the way.”


Why? Because the Lord said to Moses, “Tell the people of Israel, ‘You are a stubborn people. I might destroy you even if I travel with you only a short time. So take off all your jewelry while I decide [332] what to do with you.’”


“Lord, if you are pleased with me, then please go with us. I know that these are stubborn people. But forgive us for the bad things we did! Accept us as your people.”


I did that because I knew\par you were stubborn.\par \{You refused to believe anything I said\}.\par You were very stubborn—\par like iron \{that does not bend\}\par and as hard as bronze.\par


But the people turned against the Lord.\par They made his Holy Spirit very sad.\par So the Lord became their enemy.\par The Lord fought against those people.\par


But your ancestors did not obey me. They did not pay attention to me. Your ancestors were very stubborn. I punished them, but it did not do any good. They did not listen to me.


Become the Lord’s people.\par Change your hearts! {\cf2\super [20]} \par Men of Judah and people of Jerusalem,\par if you don’t change,\par then I will become very angry.\par My anger will spread fast like a fire,\par and my anger will burn you up.\par And no person will be able to put out that fire.\par Why will this happen?\par Because of the evil things you have done.”\par


Who can I speak to?\par Who can I warn?\par Who will listen to me?\par The people of Israel have closed their ears,\par so they can’t hear my warnings.\par The people don’t like the Lord’s teachings.\par They don’t want to hear his message.\par


I am sending you to speak to those people. But they are very stubborn. They are very hard headed. But you must speak to those people. You must say, ‘The Lord our Master says these things.’


You brought foreigners into my temple—and those people were not truly circumcised {\cf2\super [417]} —they did not give themselves completely to me. In this way you made my temple unclean. You broke our agreement and did terrible things, and then you gave me the offerings of bread, the fat, and the blood. But this only made my temple unclean.


The Lord my Master says these things, “A foreigner that is not truly circumcised {\cf2\super [418]} must not come into my temple—not even a foreigner living permanently among the people of Israel. He must be circumcised and he must give himself completely to me \{before he can come into my temple\}.


Maybe they will admit that I turned against them and brought them into the land of their enemies. Those people will be like strangers to me. But maybe they will become humble [453] and accept the punishment for their sin.


Remember when the people became angry at the water in the desert of Zin. Both you and Aaron refused to obey my command. You did not honor me and show the people that I am holy.” (This was at the water of Meribah [321] near Kadesh in the desert of Zin.)


But the Spirit {\cf2\super [118]} was helping Stephen speak with wisdom. His words were so strong that the Jews could not argue with him.


The man who was doing wrong to the other man pushed Moses away. He said to Moses, ‘Did anyone say you could be our ruler and judge? No!


“This Moses was the same man the Israelites {\cf2\super [136]} said they did not want. They had said to him, ‘Did anyone say you could be our ruler and judge? {\cf2\super [137]} No!’ Moses is the same man that God sent to be a ruler and savior. God sent Moses with the help of an angel. This was the angel Moses saw in the burning bush.


“But our ancestors did not want to obey Moses. They rejected him. They wanted to go back to Egypt again.


“These fathers {\cf2\super [128]} became jealous of Joseph (their younger brother). They sold Joseph to be a slave in Egypt. But God was with Joseph.


If you follow the law, {\cf2\super [21]} then your circumcision {\cf2\super [22]} has meaning. But if you break the law, then it is like you were never circumcised.


“Stop being stubborn. Give your hearts to the Lord.


The Lord your God will make you and your descendants want to obey him. [198] Then you will love the Lord with all your heart. And you will live!


I know you are very stubborn. I know you want to live your own way. Look, you refused to obey the Lord while I was with you. So I know you will refuse to obey him after I die.


“The Lord also said to me, ‘I have watched these people. They are very stubborn!


The Lord your God is giving you that good land to live in, but you should know that it is not because you are good. The truth is that you are very stubborn people!


But we are the people who are truly circumcised. {\cf2\super [16]} We worship (serve) God through his Spirit. {\cf2\super [17]} We are proud to be in Christ Jesus. And we don’t trust in ourselves or anything we can do.


In Christ you had a different kind of circumcision. {\cf2\super [9]} That circumcision was not done by the hands of any person. I mean you were made free from the power of your sinful self. That is the kind of circumcision Christ does.
