The king said to Zadok the priest, “You are a seer. [89] Go back to the city in peace. Take your son Ahimaaz and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.


Zadok’s son Ahimaaz and Abiathar’s son Jonathan will be with them. You will send them to tell me everything you hear.”


{The priests’ sons,} Jonathan and Ahimaaz, waited at En Rogel. They did not want to be seen going into the town, so a servant girl came out to them. She gave them the message. Then Jonathan and Ahimaaz went and told those things to King David.


Joab answered Ahimaaz, “No, you will not bring the news {to David} today. You can bring the news another time, but not today. Why? Because the king’s son is dead.”


Ahimaaz answered, “No matter what happens, I will run {to David}.”


The Ethiopian arrived. He said, “News for my lord and king. Today the Lord has punished the people who were against you!”


\{Lord,\} surely you see the cruel and evil things\par that bad people do.\par Look at those things,\par and do something!\par People with many troubles\par come to you for help.\par Lord, you are the One who helps orphans. {\cf2\super [56]} \par \{So help them!\}\par


Lord, protect the children without parents.\par Don’t let sad people suffer more troubles.\par Make bad people too afraid to stay here.\par


Lord, get up {\cf2\super [37]} and show your anger!\par My enemy is angry,\par so stand and fight against him.\par Lord, get up and demand fairness!\par

You are the good judge.\par You sat on your throne {\cf2\super [48]} as judge.\par Lord, you listened to my case.\par And you made the decision about me.\par


One messenger follows another.\par Messenger follows messenger.\par They announce to the king of Babylon\par that his whole city has been captured.\par


My friends, don’t try to punish people when they do wrong to you. Wait for God to punish them with his anger. It is written: “I am the One who punishes; I will pay people back,” {\cf2\super [132]} says the Lord.
