2 Kings 17:7 - Easy To Read Version

7 These things happened because the Israelites had sinned against the Lord their God. And it was the Lord that brought the Israelites out of the land of Egypt! The Lord saved them from the power of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. But the Israelites began worshiping other gods.

When Solomon was old, his wives caused him to follow other gods. Solomon did not follow the Lord completely the way that his father David had done.


He did all the same sins that his father before him had done. Abijah was not faithful to the Lord his God. In this way, he was not like his grandfather, David.


Ahaz was 20 years old when he became king. Ahaz ruled 16 years in Jerusalem. Ahaz was not like his ancestor [186] David—Ahaz did not do the things the Lord said were right.


The Lord made an Agreement with the people of Israel. The Lord commanded them, “You must not honor other gods. You must not worship them, or serve them, or offer sacrifices to them.


But those leaders sinned against the God that their ancestors [49] worshiped. They began worshiping the false gods of the people living there—and those were the people God destroyed.


Jehoiakim was 25 years old when he became the new king of Judah. He was king in Jerusalem for eleven years. Jehoiakim didn’t do the things the Lord wanted him to do. He sinned against the Lord his God.


And then they turned against you!\par They threw away your teachings!\par They killed your prophets.\par Those prophets warned the people.\par They tried to bring them back to you.\par But our ancestors {\cf2\super [55]} did terrible things\par against you!\par


God showed their fathers\par his great power at Zoan in Egypt.\par


“I am the Lord [123] your God. I led you out of the land of Egypt where you were slaves. {So you must obey these commands:}


All you want is to worship false gods\par under every green tree.\par You kill children by every stream,\par and sacrifice them in the rocky places.\par


The idols of the other nations are like\par a scarecrow in a cucumber field.\par Those idols can’t walk.\par They can’t talk.\par And the people must carry them.\par So don’t be afraid of those idols.\par They can’t hurt you.\par


They sinned and made themselves filthy. So I punished them for the things they did. I turned away from them \{and refused to help them\}.”


But Ephraim caused the Lord to be very angry. Ephraim killed many people. So he will be punished for his crimes. His master (the Lord) will make him bear his shame.”


My people are asking pieces of wood for advice. They think those sticks will answer them. Why? Because they have chased after those false gods like prostitutes. {\cf2\super [38]} They left their God and became like prostitutes.


They make sacrifices on the tops of the mountains and burn incense {\cf2\super [39]} on the hills under oak trees, poplar trees, and elm trees. {\cf2\super [40]} The shade under those trees looks nice. So your daughters lie under those trees like prostitutes. And your daughters-in-law do their sexual sins.


I know that after my death you will become evil. You will turn from the way I commanded you to follow. Bad things will happen to you in the future. Why? Because you want to do the things that the Lord says are evil. You will make him angry because of the bad things you do.”


This will happen if you refuse to keep your agreement with the Lord your God. You will lose this land if you go and serve other gods. You must not worship those other gods. If you do, the Lord will become very angry at you. Then you will quickly be forced to leave this good land that he gave you.”


Then I said to you, ‘I am the Lord your God. You will live in the land of the Amorite people, but you must not worship their false gods.’ But you did not obey me.”
