God sent prophets to the people to bring them back to the Lord. The prophets warned the people. But the people refused to listen.


Zedekiah turned against King Nebuchadnezzar. In the past Nebuchadnezzar forced Zedekiah to make a promise to be faithful to Nebuchadnezzar. Zedekiah used God’s name and promised to be faithful to Nebuchadnezzar. But Zedekiah was very stubborn and refused to change his life and come back and obey the Lord God of Israel.


You warned them.\par You told them to come back.\par But they were too proud.\par They refused to listen to your commands.\par If people obey your laws,\par then they will truly live!\par But our ancestors {\cf2\super [57]} broke your laws.\par They were stubborn.\par They turned their backs on you.\par They refused to listen.\par


But then those people refused to go\par into the wonderful land of Canaan.\par They did not believe God would help them\par defeat the people living in that land.\par


Why? Because the people did not trust him.\par They did not believe God could save them.\par


But the people still sinned again!\par They didn’t depend on the amazing things\par that God could do.\par


If the people teach their God’s commands\par to their children,\par then the children will not be like\par their ancestors. {\cf2\super [444]} \par Their ancestors turned against God.\par They refused to obey him.\par Those people were stubborn.\par They were not loyal to God’s Spirit.\par


Then the Lord said to Moses, “How long will you people refuse to obey my commands and teachings?


The Lord said to Moses, “I have seen these people. I know that they are very stubborn people. They will always turn against me.


So go to the land filled with many good things. [331] But I will not go with you. You people are very stubborn, {and you make me very angry}. If I go with you, I might destroy you along the way.”


If a person is stubborn and becomes more angry every time people tell him that he is doing wrong, then that person will be destroyed. There is no hope.


I did that because I knew\par you were stubborn.\par \{You refused to believe anything I said\}.\par You were very stubborn—\par like iron \{that does not bend\}\par and as hard as bronze.\par


I said to myself, ‘Israel will come back to me after she has finished doing these evil things.’ But she did not come back to me. And Israel’s unfaithful sister, Judah, saw what she did.


I said to your ancestors: ‘At the end of every seven years, each person must set his Hebrew slaves free. If you have a fellow Hebrew that has sold himself to you, you must let him go free after he has served you for six years.’ But your ancestors didn’t listen to me or pay attention to me.


But your ancestors did not listen to me. They did not pay attention to me. They were very stubborn and did evil worse than their fathers.


“Son of man, {\cf2\super [102]} you live among rebellious people—they always turn against me. They have eyes to see \{the things I have done for them\}. But they don’t see those things. They have ears to hear \{the things I told them to do\}. But they don’t hear my commands. Why? Because they are a rebellious people.


He said to me, “Son of man, I am sending you to speak to the family of Israel. Those people turned against me many times. And their ancestors turned against me. They have sinned against me many times—and they are still sinning against me today.


“Maybe you will warn a person and tell him to change his life and stop doing bad things. If that person refuses to listen to you, then that person will die. He will die because he sinned. But you warned him, so you saved your own life.


But Nebuchadnezzar became proud and stubborn. So his power was taken away from him. He was taken off his royal throne and stripped of his glory.


But the more I {\cf2\super [114]} called the Israelites,\par the more the Israelites left me.\par The Israelites gave sacrifices to the Baals. {\cf2\super [115]} \par They burned incense {\cf2\super [116]} to the idols. {\cf2\super [117]} \par


\{Then Stephen said,\} “You stubborn Jewish leaders! You have not given your hearts to God! You won’t listen to him! You are always against what the Holy Spirit {\cf2\super [147]} is trying to tell you. Your ancestors did this, and you are just like them!


“But you still did not trust the Lord your God!


I know you are very stubborn. I know you want to live your own way. Look, you refused to obey the Lord while I was with you. So I know you will refuse to obey him after I die.


“The Lord also said to me, ‘I have watched these people. They are very stubborn!


So, brothers and sisters, be careful that none of you is sinful, and refuses to believe, and stops following the living God.
