These men brought out Joash. They put the crown on Joash and gave him the agreement between the king and God. [139] Then they anointed [140] him and made him the new king. They clapped their hands and shouted, “Long live the king!”

When that happens, then you must be sure to choose the king that the Lord chooses. The king over you must be one of your own people. You must not make a foreigner your king.


All the people went to Gilgal. There, in front of the Lord, the people made Saul king. They offered fellowship offerings to the Lord. Saul and all the Israelites had a great celebration.


Samuel said to all Israel: “I have done everything you wanted me to do. I have put a king over you.


Now, here is the king you chose. The Lord put this king over you.


Kish had a son named Saul. Saul was a handsome young man. There was no one more handsome than Saul. Saul stood a head taller than any other man in Israel.
