1 Kings 8:16 - Easy To Read Version

16 ‘I brought my people, Israel, out of Egypt. But I had not yet chosen a city from among the family groups of Israel for a temple to honor me. And I had not chosen a man to be leader over my people, Israel. But now I have chosen Jerusalem to be the city where I will be honored. And I have chosen David to rule over my people, Israel.’

I will allow Solomon’s son to continue to rule over one family group. I will do this so that my servant David will always have a descendant to rule before me in Jerusalem, the city that I chose to be my own.


In the past you said, ‘I will be honored there.’ So please watch this temple night and day. Please listen to the prayer that I pray to you at this temple.


The Lord said, “I forced the people of Israel to leave their land. I will do the same to Judah. I will take Judah out of my sight. I will not accept Jerusalem. Yes, I chose that city. I was talking about Jerusalem when I said, ‘My name will be there.’ But I will destroy the temple [309] that is in that place.”


But that night the word of God came to Nathan.


“The Lord God of Israel chose the family group of Judah to lead the twelve family groups of Israel. And then from that family group, the Lord chose my father’s family. And from that family, God chose me to be the king of Israel forever! God wanted to make me king of Israel!


But if you people of Israel come back to me and obey my commands, then this is what I will do: Even if your people have been forced to leave their homes and go to the ends of the earth, I will gather them from there. And I will bring them back to the place I have chosen to put my name.”


The Lord chose Zion {\cf2\super [622]} to be the place\par for his temple.\par That is the place he wanted for his home.\par


God chose David to be his special servant.\par David was guarding the sheep pens,\par but God took him away from that job.\par


God said,\par “I made an agreement with my chosen king.\par I made a promise to my servant, David:\par


“You people of Judah, go now to the town of Shiloh. Go to the place where I first made a house for my name. The people of Israel also did evil things. Go and see what I did to that place because of the evil things they did. {\cf2\super [59]}


Then the Lord will choose a place to be his special house. The Lord will put his name there. And you must bring all the things I command you to that place. Bring your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, one tenth of your crops and animals, [75] your special gifts, any gifts you promised to the Lord, and the first animals born in your herd and flock.


The Lord your God will choose a special place among your family groups. The Lord will put his name there. That will be his special house. You must go to that place to worship him.


The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you feel sorry for Saul? You are feeling sorry for him, even after I told you that I refuse to let Saul be the king of Israel! Fill your horn [141] with oil and go to Bethlehem. I am sending you to a man named Jesse. Jesse lives in Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be the new king.”
