And I proclaimed there a fast by the river Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before the Lord our God, and might ask of him a right way for us, and for our children, and for all our substance.


There the workers of iniquity are fallen, they are cast out, and could not stand.


Is this such a fast as I have chosen: for a man to afflict his soul for a day? Is this it: To wind his head about like a circle and to spread sackcloth and ashes? Wilt thou call this a fast and a day acceptable to the Lord?


And this shall be to you an everlasting ordinance: The seventh month, the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and shall do no work, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you.


Upon the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the day of atonement. It shall be most solemn, and shall be called holy: and you shall afflict your souls on that day, and shall offer a holocaust to the Lord.


It is a sabbath of rest, and you shell afflict your souls beginning on the ninth day of the month: from evening until evening you shall celebrate your sabbaths.


The tenth day also of this seventh month shall be holy and venerable unto you: and you shall afflict your souls. You shall do no servile work therein.


If her husband hear, and hold his peace, and doth not disallow the promise, she shall accomplish whatsoever she had promised.


If she vow and bind herself by oath, to afflict her soul by fasting, or abstinence from other things, it shall depend on the will of her husband, whether she shall do it, or not do it.


But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.


For the man was not created for the woman, but the woman for the man.


Defraud not one another, except, perhaps, by consent, for a time, that you may give yourselves to prayer; and return together again, lest Satan tempt you for your incontinency.
