Because they have done evil before me, and have continued to provoke me, from the day that their fathers came out of Egypt, even unto this day.


He ordained it for a testimony in Joseph, when he came out of the land of Egypt: he heard a tongue which he knew not.


For it is a day of slaughter and of treading down, and of weeping to the Lord the God of hosts in the valley of vision: searching the wall, and magnificent upon the mountain.


They have possessed thy holy people as nothing: our enemies have trodden down thy sanctuary.


My tabernacle is laid waste, all my cords are broken: my children are gone out from me and they are not: there is none to stretch forth my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.


I have forsaken my house, I have left my inheritance, I have given my dear soul into the land of her enemies.


And I have seen the likeness of adulterers and the way of lying in the prophets of Jerusalem: and they strengthened the hand of the wicked, that no man should return from his evil doings. That are all become unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrha.


And Nabuzardan the general of the army carried away captive to Babylon the remnant of the people that remained in the city, and the fugitives that had gone over to him, and the rest of the people that remained.


Shall I not visit for these things, saith the Lord? Or shall not my soul take revenge on such a nation?


Ain. Therefore do I weep and my eyes run down with water, because the comforter, the relief of my soul, is far from me: my children are desolate because the enemy hath prevailed.


Sade. The Lord is just, for I have provoked his mouth to wrath: hear, I pray you, all ye people, and see my sorrow: my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.


Heth. Jerusalem hath grievously sinned, therefore is she become unstable: all that honoured her have despised her, because they have seen her shame: but she sighed and turned backward.


Ain. The Lord hath done that which he purposed, he hath fulfilled his word, which he commanded in the days of old: he hath destroyed and hath not spared, and he hath caused the enemy to rejoice over thee and hath set up the horn of thy adversaries.


Phe. All our enemies have opened their mouths against us.


Therefore neither shall my eye spare nor will I have pity: I will requite their way upon their head.


And he said to me: The iniquity of the house of Israel and of Juda is exceeding great, and the land is filled with blood, and the city is filled with perverseness. For they have said: The Lord hath forsaken the earth, and, the Lord seeth not.


For I know that, after my death, you will do wickedly, and will quickly turn aside from the way that I have commanded you: and evils shall come upon you in the latter times, when you shall do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him by the works of your hands.
