And Jacob having called together all his household, said: Cast away the strange gods that are among you, and be cleansed and change your garments.


The high places also that were at Jerusalem on the right side of the Mount of Offence, which Solomon king of Israel had built to Astaroth the idol of the Sidonians, and to Chamos the scandal of Moab, and to Melchom the abomination of the children of Ammon, the king defiled.


Moreover the diviners by spirits, and soothsayers, and the figures of idols, and the uncleannesses, and the abominations, that had been in the land of Juda and Jerusalem, Josias took away: that he might perform the words of the law, that were written in the book which Helcias the priest had found in the temple of the Lord.


And when Asa had heard the words, and the prophecy of Azarias the son of Oded, the prophet, he took courage, and took away the idols out of all the land of Juda, and out of Benjamin, and out of the cities of mount Ephraim, which he had taken; and he dedicated the altar of the Lord, which was before the porch of the Lord.


And I will not make the foot of Israel to be removed out of the land which I have delivered to their fathers: yet so if they will take heed to do what I have commanded them, and all the law, and the ceremonies, and judgments by the hand of Moses.


And Josias took away all the abominations out of all the countries of the children of Israel: and made all that were left in Israel to serve the Lord their God. As long as he lived they departed not from the Lord the God of their fathers.


Return as you had deeply revolted, O children of Israel.


Therefore thus saith the Lord: If thou wilt be converted, I will convert thee, and thou shalt stand before my face: and if thou wilt separate the precious from the vile, thou shalt be as my mouth. They shall be turned to thee, and thou shalt not be turned to them.


And I will give them up to the rage of all the kingdoms of the earth: because of Manasses the son of Ezechias the king of Juda, for all that he did in Jerusalem.


Now therefore tell the men of Juda and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying: Thus saith the Lord: Behold, I frame evil against you and devise a device against you. Let every man of you return from his evil way: and make ye your ways and your doings good.


And I will deliver them up to vexation and affliction, to all the kingdoms of the earth: to be a reproach and a byword and a proverb, and to be a curse in all places to which I have cast them out.


When he said: Return ye, every one from his evil way and from your wicked devices: and you shall dwell in the land which the Lord hath given to you and your fathers for ever and ever.


It is commonly said: If a man put away his wife, and she go from him and marry another man, shall he return to her any more? Shall not that woman be polluted and defiled? But thou hast prostituted thyself to many lovers. Nevertheless return to me, saith the Lord, and I will receive thee.


Go, and proclaim these words toward the north. And thou shalt say: Return, O rebellious Israel, saith the Lord, and I will not turn away my face from you: for I am holy, saith the Lord, and I will not be angry for ever.


Return, O ye revolting children, saith the Lord: for I am your husband: and I will take you, one of a city, and two of a kindred, and will bring you into Sion.


Return, you rebellious children, and I will heal your rebellions. Behold, we come to thee: for thou art the Lord our God.


And I have sent to you all my servants the prophets, rising early, and sending and saying: Return ye every man from his wicked way and make your ways good, and follow not strange gods nor worship them: and you shall dwell in the land: which I gave you and your fathers. And you have not inclined your ear, nor hearkened to me.


If so be, when the house of Juda shall hear all the evils that I purpose to do unto them, that they may return every man from his wicked way: and I will forgive their iniquity and their sin.


Be circumcised to the Lord, and take away the foreskins of your hearts, ye men of Juda and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem: lest my indignation come forth like fire and burn, and there be none that can quench it: because of the wickedness of your thoughts.


Thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel: Make your ways and your doings good: and I will dwell with you in this place.


For if you will order well your ways and your doings: if you will execute judgement between a man and his neighbor;


I will dwell with you in this place: in the land, which I gave to your fathers from the beginning and for evermore.


And they shall go in thither and shall take away all the scandals and all the abominations thereof from thence.


That giveth upon usury and that taketh an increase: shall such a one live? He shall not live. Seeing he hath done all these detestable things, he shall surely die: his blood shall be upon him.


Now therefore let them put away their fornications, and the carcasses of their kings far from me: and I will dwell in the midst of them for ever.


Let Samaria perish, because she hath stirred up her God to bitterness: let them perish by the sword, let their little ones be dashed, and let the women with child be ripped up.


Judge your mother, judge her: because she is not my wife, and I am not her husband. Let her put away her fornications from her face, and her adulteries from between her breasts.


They returned, that they might be without yoke: they became like a deceitful bow: their princes shall fall by the sword, for the rage of their tongue. This is their derision in the land of Egypt.


Now therefore saith the Lord: Be converted to me with all your heart, in fasting, and in weeping, and in mourning.


Be not as your fathers, to whom the former prophets have cried, saying: Thus saith the Lord of hosts: Turn ye from your evil ways, and from your wicked thoughts: but they did not give ear, neither did they hearken to me, saith the Lord.


Cursed be the man that maketh a graven and molten thing, the abomination of the Lord, the work of the hands of artificers, and shall put it in a secret place. And all the people shall answer and say: Amen.


After all the things aforesaid shall and thee: in the latter time thou shalt return to the Lord thy God, and shalt hear his voice.


Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him with a perfect and most sincere heart. And put away the gods which your fathers served in Mesopotamia and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.


And saying these things, they cast away out of their coasts all the idols of strange gods and served the Lord their God. And he was touched with their miseries.


And Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying: If you turn to the Lord with all your heart, put away the strange gods from among you, Baalim and Astaroth. And prepare your hearts unto the Lord, and serve him only; and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.
