Out of the cities they have made men to groan. And the soul of the wounded hath cried out: and God doth not suffer it to pass unrevenged.


I have seen a fool with a strong root: and I cursed his beauty immediately.


And the Lord said: Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips glorify me, but their heart is far from me, and they have feared me with the commandment and doctrines of men:


And the Lord of hosts that planted thee hath pronounced evil against thee: for the evils of the house of Israel and the house of Juda which they have done to themselves, to provoke me, offering sacrifice to Baalim.


And after all this, her treacherous sister Juda hath not returned to me with her whole heart, but with falsehood, saith the Lord.


Thus saith the Lord: Thus shalt thou say to him: Behold, them whom I have built, I do destroy: and them whom I have planted, I do pluck up, and all this land.


And they come to thee, as if a people were coming in, and my people sit before thee: and hear thy words, and do them not: for they turn them into a song of their mouth, and their heart goeth after their covetousness.


And they have not cried to me with their heart, but they howled in their beds: they have thought upon wheat and wine, they are departed from me.


Thy eyes are too pure to behold evil, and thou canst not look on iniquity. Why lookest thou upon them that do unjust things, and holdest thy peace when the wicked devoureth the man that is more just than himself?


This people honoureth me with their lips: but their heart is far from me.


But he answering, said to them: Well did Isaias prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.


They profess that they know God: but in their works they deny him; being abominable, and incredulous, and to every good work reprobate.
