And when the sun was set, there arose a dark mist; and there appeared a smoking furnace, and a lamp of fire passing between those divisions.


And it came to pass after many days, that Cain offered, of the fruits of the earth, gifts to the Lord.


Call ye on the names of your gods, and I will call on the name of my Lord: and the God that shall answer by fire, let him be God. And all the people answering said: A very good proposal.


Then the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the holocaust, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.


And he built there an altar to the Lord: and he offered holocausts, and peace-offerings, and he called upon the Lord. And he heard him by sending fire from heaven upon the altar of the holocaust.


And when Solomon had made an end of his prayer, fire came down from heaven, and consumed the holocausts and the victims. And the majesty of the Lord filled the house.


Thou hast given him his heart's desire: end hast not withholden from him the will of his lips.


Thou shalt set apart all that openeth the womb for the Lord, and all that is first brought forth of thy cattle. Whatsoever thou shalt have of the male sex, thou shalt consecrate to the Lord.


Honour the Lord with thy substance, and give him of the first of all thy fruits:


Again I considered all the labours of men, and I remarked that their industries are exposed to the envy of their neighbour: so in this also there is vanity, and fruitless care.


And, behold, a fire, coming forth from the Lord, devoured the holocaust, and the fat that was upon the altar: which when the multitude saw, they praised the Lord, falling on their faces.


Moses therefore being very angry said to the Lord: Respect not their sacrifices. Thou knowest that I have not taken of them so much as a young ass at any time: nor have injured any of them.


And a fire coming out from the Lord destroyed the two hundred and fifty men that offered the incense.


All the best of the oil, and of the wine, and of the corn, whatsoever first-fruits they offer to the Lord, I have given them to thee.


But the firstling of a cow and of a sheep and of a goat thou shalt not cause to be redeemed, because they are sanctified to the Lord. Their blood only thou shalt pour upon the altar: and their fat thou shalt burn for a most sweet odour to the Lord.


By faith Abel offered to God a sacrifice exceeding that of Cain, by which he obtained a testimony that he was just, God giving testimony to his gifts; and by it he being dead yet speaketh.


And almost all things, according to the law, are cleansed with blood: and without shedding of blood there is no remission.


And all the dwell upon the earth adored him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb, which was slain from the beginning of the world.


The angel of the Lord put forth the tip of the rod, which he held in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened loaves. And there arose a fire from the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened loaves: and the angel of the Lord vanished out of his sight.


And Samuel said: Doth the Lord desire holocausts and victims, and not rather that the voice of the Lord should be obeyed? For obedience is better than sacrifices; and to hearken rather than to offer the fat of rams.
