He looked down towards Sodom and Gomorrah and all the land of the plain, and he saw that smoke was going up from the land like the smoke of a furnace.


And Babylon, the jewel of the kingdoms, the glory of the pride of the Chaldeans, will be like Sodom and Gomorrah when God overthrew them.


Indeed! Topheth has been ready for the king for a long time. Its funeral pyre is deep and wide, with plenty of fire and wood. The breath of the Lord,  like a torrent of burning sulphur, kindles it.


Just as God demolished Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbouring towns   – this is the  Lord’s declaration – so no one will live there; no human being will stay in it even temporarily as a temporary resident.


At the sound of Babylon’s conquest the earth will quake; a cry will be heard among the nations.


Suddenly Babylon fell and was shattered. Wail for her; get balm  for her wound – perhaps she can be healed.


All the inhabitants of the coasts and islands are appalled  at you. Their kings shudder with fear; their faces are contorted.


He called out loudly: Cut down the tree and chop off its branches; strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. Let the animals flee from under it, and the birds from its branches.


All its soil will be a burning waste of sulphur and salt, unsown, producing nothing, with no plant growing on it, just like the fall of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord demolished in his fierce anger.


But refuse to enrol younger widows, for when they are drawn away from Christ by desire, they want to marry


and the smoke of their torment will go up for ever and ever.  There is no rest  , day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or anyone who receives the mark  of its name.


The kings of the earth  committed sexual immorality with her, and those who live on the earth became drunk on the wine of her sexual immorality.’


as they watched the smoke from her burning and kept crying out, ‘Who was like the great city? ’


Rejoice over her, heaven, and you saints, apostles, and prophets, because God has pronounced on her the judgement  she passed on you!


For all the nations have drunk the wine of her sexual immorality, which brings wrath. The kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality with her, and the merchants of the earth have grown wealthy from her sensuality and excess.


As much as she glorified herself and indulged her sensual and excessive ways, give her that much torment and grief. For she says in her heart, ‘I sit as a queen; I am not a widow, and I will never see grief.’


A second time they said, Hallelujah! Her smoke ascends for ever and ever!


Look, I will throw her into a sick-bed   and those who commit adultery with her   into great affliction.   Unless they repent of her   works,
