During David’s reign there was a famine for three successive years, so David enquired  of the Lord. The Lord answered, ‘It is due to Saul and to his bloody family, because he killed the Gibeonites.’


The governor  ordered them not to eat the most holy things until there was a priest who could consult the Urim and Thummim.

They went up, wept  before the Lord until evening,  and enquired of him, ‘Should we again attack our brothers the Benjaminites? ’ And the Lord answered, ‘Fight against them.’


While Saul spoke to the priest,  the panic in the Philistine camp increased in intensity. So Saul said to the priest, ‘Stop what you’re doing.’


When David learned that Saul was plotting evil against him, he said to the priest Abiathar,  ‘Bring the ephod.’


He enquired of the Lord, but the Lord did not answer him in dreams or by the Urim or by the prophets.


David said to the priest Abiathar son of Ahimelech, ‘Bring me the ephod.’  So Abiathar brought it to him,
