Every land came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain, for the famine was severe in every land.


Listen,’ he went on, ‘I have heard there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy some for us so that we will live and not die.’


Then Judah said to his father Israel, ‘Send the boy with me. We will be on our way so that we may live and not die #– #neither we, nor you, nor our dependents.


Why should we die here in front of you #– #both us and our land? Buy us and our land in exchange for food. Then we with our land will become Pharaoh’s slaves. Give us seed so that we can live and not die, and so that the land won’t become desolate.’


One of the wives of the sons of the prophets  cried out to Elisha, ‘Your servant, my husband, has died. You know that your servant feared the Lord.  Now the creditor is coming to take my two children as his slaves.’


Others were saying, ‘We are mortgaging our fields, vineyards, and homes to get grain during the famine.’


You have planted much but harvested little. You eat but never have enough to be satisfied. You drink but never have enough to be happy. You put on clothes but never have enough to get warm. The wage earner puts his wages into a bag with a hole in it.’


If you don’t listen, and if you don’t take it to heart  to honour my name,’ says the Lord of Armies, ‘I will send a curse among you, and I will curse your blessings.  In fact, I have already begun to curse them because you are not taking it to heart.


‘Do not charge your brother interest on silver, food, or anything that can earn interest.
