34 We have cast lots  among the priests, Levites, and people for the donation of wood by our ancestral families  at the appointed times each year. They are to bring the wood to our God’s house to burn on the altar of the Lord our God,  as it is written in the law.

They  were assigned by lot, for there were officers of the sanctuary and officers of God among both Eleazar’s and Ithamar’s descendants.


The first lot fell to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah,


Then Solomon sent word to King Hiram  , of Tyre: Do for me what you did for my father David. You sent him cedars to build him a house to live in.


After that, they offered the regular burnt offering and the offerings for the beginning of each month  , and for all the Lord’s appointed holy occasions, as well as the freewill offerings brought to  the Lord.


Now the leaders of the people stayed in Jerusalem,  and the rest of the people cast lots  for one out of ten to come and live in Jerusalem, the holy city,  while the other nine-tenths remained in their towns.


I also arranged for the donation of wood at the appointed times and for the firstfruits. Remember me, my God, with favour.


Casting the lot  ends quarrels and separates powerful opponents.


Lebanon’s cedars are not enough for fuel, or its animals enough for a burnt offering.


‘Take fine flour and bake it into twelve loaves;  each loaf is to be made with four litres.


Arrange them in two rows, six to a row, on the pure gold table  before the Lord.


‘Command the Israelites and say to them: Be sure to present to me at its appointed time my offering and my food  as my food offering, a pleasing aroma to me.


Then they cast lots  for them, and the lot fell to Matthias and he was added to the eleven apostles.


On that day he made them woodcutters and water-carriers #– #as they are today #– #for the community and for the Lord’s altar at the place he would choose.
