‘Go and enquire of the Lord for me and for those remaining in Israel and Judah, concerning the words of the book that was found. For great is the Lord’s wrath that is poured out on us  because our ancestors have not kept the word of the Lord in order to do everything written in this book.’


because they have abandoned me  and burned incense to other gods so as to anger me with all the works of their hands. My wrath will be poured out on this place, and it will not be quenched.”


His anger  burns against me, and he regards me as one of his enemies.


Surely the arrows of the Almighty have pierced   me; my spirit drinks their poison. God’s terrors are arrayed against me.


So he poured out his furious anger and the power of war on Jacob. It surrounded him with fire, but he did not know it; it burned him, but he didn’t take it to heart.


But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit. So he became their enemy and fought against them.


I crushed nations in my anger; I made them drunk with my wrath and poured out their blood on the ground.


My tent is destroyed; all my tent cords are snapped. My sons have departed from me and are no more. I have no one to pitch my tent again or to hang up my curtains.


House of David, this is what the Lord says: Administer justice every morning, and rescue the victim of robbery from his oppressor, or my anger will flare up like fire and burn unquenchably because of your evil deeds.


I myself will fight against you  with an outstretched hand and a strong arm,  with anger, fury, and intense wrath.


All your lovers have forgotten you; they no longer look for you, for I have struck you as an enemy would, with the discipline  of someone cruel, because of your enormous guilt and your innumerable sins.


Perhaps their petition will come before the Lord,  and each one will turn from his evil way, for the anger and fury that the Lord has pronounced against this people are intense.’

You will become an example for cursing, scorn,  execration, and disgrace, and you will never see this place again.”


Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: ‘Look, my anger #– #my burning wrath #– #is about to be poured out on this place,  on people and animals, on the tree of the field, and on the produce of the land. My wrath will burn and not be quenched.’


He sent fire from on high  into my bones; he made it descend.  , He spread a net for my feet and turned me back. He made me desolate, ill all day long.


The Lord is like an enemy; he has swallowed up Israel. He swallowed up all its palaces and destroyed its fortified cities. He has multiplied mourning and lamentation within Daughter Judah.


Yes, he repeatedly turns his hand against me all day long.


How the gold has become tarnished, the fine gold become dull! The stones of the temple  lie scattered at the head of every street.


The Lord has exhausted his wrath, poured out his burning anger; he has ignited a fire in Zion, and it has consumed her foundations.


‘ “So this is what the Lord God says: I will release a whirlwind in my wrath. Torrential rain will come in my anger, and hailstones will fall in destructive fury.


I will bring you from the peoples and gather you from the countries where you were scattered,  with a strong hand, an outstretched arm,  and outpoured wrath.


As silver is melted inside a furnace, so you will be melted inside the city. Then you will know that I, the Lord, have poured out my wrath on you.’


‘As for you, son of man, know that on that day I will take from them their stronghold #– #their pride and joy, the delight of their eyes, and the longing of their hearts #– #as well as their sons and daughters.


So I poured out my wrath  on them because of the blood they had shed on the land, and because they had defiled it with their idols.


When my anger is spent and I have vented my wrath on them, I will be appeased.  Then after I have spent my wrath on them, they will know that I, the Lord, have spoken in my jealousy.


The one who is far off will die by plague; the one who is near will fall by the sword; and the one who remains and is spared  will die of famine. In this way I will exhaust my wrath on them.


They have blown the trumpet and prepared everything, but no one goes to war, for my wrath is on her whole crowd.


I will turn  against you, so that you will be defeated by your enemies. Those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee even though no one is pursuing you.


The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; the Lord takes vengeance and is fierce in   wrath. The Lord takes vengeance against his foes; he is furious with his enemies.


Who can withstand his indignation? Who can endure his burning anger? His wrath is poured out like fire; even rocks are shattered before him.


For fire has been kindled because of my anger and burns to the depths of Sheol; it devours the land and its produce, and scorches the foundations of the mountains.


Samuel answered, ‘Since the Lord has turned away from you and has become your enemy, why are you asking me?
