Lord, they went to you in their distress; they poured out whispered prayers because your discipline fell on them.


They will consume your harvest and your food. They will consume your sons and your daughters. They will consume your flocks and your herds. They will consume your vines and your fig trees. With the sword they will destroy your fortified cities  in which you trust.


I will depart and return to my place until they recognise their guilt and seek my face; they will search for me in their distress.


Though Edom says, ‘We have been devastated, but we will rebuild  the ruins,’ the Lord of Armies says this: ‘They may build, but I will demolish. They will be called a wicked country  and the people the Lord has cursed  for ever.


The resident foreigner among you will rise higher and higher above you, while you sink lower and lower.


so they cried out to the Lord, saying, ‘We have sinned against you.  We have abandoned our God and worshipped the Baals.’
