He said to Jacob, ‘Let me eat some of that red stuff, because I’m exhausted.’ That is why he was also named Edom.


Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. And Esau determined in his heart, ‘The days of mourning for my father are approaching; then I will kill my brother Jacob.’


Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the territory of Edom.


The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.


These are the chiefs among Esau’s sons: the sons of Eliphaz, Esau’s firstborn: chief Teman, chief Omar, chief Zepho, chief Kenaz,


When Jobab died, Husham from the land of the Temanites reigned in his place.


So Esau (that is, Edom) lived in the mountains of Seir.


Now when Job’s three friends #– #Eliphaz the Temanite,  Bildad the Shuhite,  and Zophar the Naamathite #– #heard about all this adversity that had happened to him, each of them came from his home. They met together to go and sympathise with him and comfort  him.


Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:


A pronouncement  concerning Dumah:  , One calls to me from Seir, ‘Watchman, what is left of the night? Watchman, what is left of the night? ’


Therefore, I will again confound these people with wonder after wonder. The wisdom of their wise will vanish, and the perception of their perceptive will be hidden.


This is what the Lord says: ‘Concerning all my evil neighbours who attack the inheritance that I bequeathed to my people, Israel, I am about to uproot them  from their land, and I will uproot the house of Judah from them.


Then certain ones said, ‘Come, let’s make plans against Jeremiah,  for instruction will never be lost from the priest,  or counsel from the wise, or a word from the prophet.  Come, let’s denounce him  and pay no attention to all his words.’


Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all those who clip the hair on their temples;  ,


I am going to send for all the families of the north”   #– #this is the Lord’s declaration #– #”and send for my servant  Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and I will bring them against this land, against its residents, and against all these surrounding nations, and I will completely destroy them and make them an example of horror  and scorn, and ruins for ever.


Therefore, hear the plans that the Lord has drawn up against Edom and the strategies he has devised against the people of Teman:  The flock’s little lambs will certainly be dragged away,  and their grazing land will be made desolate because of them.


The wise will be put to shame; they will be dismayed and snared. They have rejected the word of the  Lord, so what wisdom do they really have?


So rejoice and be glad, Daughter Edom, you resident of the land of Uz! Yet the cup  will pass to you as well; you will get drunk and expose yourself.


‘Edom  is there, her kings and all her princes, who, despite their strength, have been placed among those slain by the sword. They lie down with the uncircumcised, with those who descend to the Pit.


He will also invade the beautiful land,  and many will fall. But these will escape from his power: Edom, Moab, and the prominent people  of the Ammonites.


Egypt will become desolate, and Edom a desert wasteland, because of the violence done to the people of Judah in whose land they shed innocent blood.


God comes from Teman, the Holy One from Mount Paran.  Selah His splendour covers the heavens, and the earth is full of his praise.


Do not despise an Edomite, because he is your brother. Do not despise an Egyptian, because you were a resident foreigner in his land.
