‘When you buy a Hebrew slave, he is to serve for six years; then in the seventh he is to leave as a free man  without paying anything.


The Lord said: These people approach me with their speeches to honour me with lip-service, yet their hearts are far from me, and human rules direct their worship of me.


When the officials of Judah heard about these things, they went from the king’s palace to the Lord’s temple and sat at the entrance of the New Gate of the Lord’s temple.  ,


Then the officials and all the people told the priests and prophets, ‘This man doesn’t deserve the death sentence, for he has spoken to us in the name of the Lord our God! ’


Afterwards, however, they changed their minds and took back their male and female slaves they had let go free and forced them to become slaves again.


The officials of Judah and Jerusalem, the court officials, the priests, and all the people of the land who passed between the pieces of the calf #– #


he went down to the scribe’s chamber in the king’s palace. All the officials were sitting there #– #Elishama the scribe, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Achbor,  Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the other officials.


The officials then said to the king, ‘This man ought to die, because he is weakening the morale  of the warriors who remain in this city and of all the people by speaking to them in this way. This man is not pursuing the welfare of this people, but their harm.’


You are to consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim freedom in the land for all its inhabitants. It will be your Jubilee,  when each of you is to return to his property and each of you to his clan.


because Herod feared  John and protected him, knowing he was a righteous  and holy  man. When Herod heard him he would be very perplexed,  , and yet he liked to listen to him.
