Have you comprehended the extent of the earth? Tell me, if you know all this.

Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his hands? Who has bound up the waters in a cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is the name of his son – if you know?

Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand or marked off the heavens with the span of his hand? Who has gathered the dust of the earth in a measure or weighed the mountains on a balance and the hills on the scales?

‘For this is like the days  of Noah to me: when I swore that the water of Noah would never flood the earth again, so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you or rebuke you.

I will produce descendants from Jacob, and heirs to my mountains from Judah; my chosen  ones will possess it, and my servants will dwell there.

For I will be with you – this is the  Lord’s declaration – to save you! I will bring destruction on all the nations where I have scattered you; however, I will not bring destruction on you. I will discipline you justly, and I will by no means leave you unpunished.

Even as the stars of heaven cannot be counted, and the sand of the sea cannot be measured,  so too I will make innumerable the descendants of my servant David and the Levites who minister to me.’

And you, my servant Jacob, do not be afraid – this is the  Lord’s declaration – for I will be with you. I will bring destruction on all the nations where I have banished you, but I will not bring destruction on you. I will discipline you with justice, and I will by no means leave you unpunished.
