Then King Neco of Egypt made Jehoahaz’s brother Eliakim king over Judah and Jerusalem and changed Eliakim’s name to Jehoiakim. But Neco took his brother Jehoahaz and brought him to Egypt.


Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned for eleven years in Jerusalem. He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord his God.


if I have consumed its produce without payment or shown contempt for its tenants,


Woe to those who add house to house and join field to field until there is no more room and you alone are left in the land.


He who makes a fortune unjustly is like a partridge that hatches eggs it didn’t lay. In the middle of his life his riches will abandon him, so in the end he will be a fool.


Therefore, this is what the Lord says concerning Jehoiakim  son of Josiah, king of Judah: They will not mourn for him, saying, ‘Woe, my brother! ’ or ‘Woe, my sister! ’ They will not mourn for him, saying, ‘Woe, lord! Woe, his majesty! ’


‘Do not oppress  your neighbour or rob  him. The wages due a hired worker  must not remain with you until morning.


who build Zion with bloodshed and Jerusalem with injustice.


Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed and founds a town with injustice!


‘I will come to you in judgement, and I will be ready to witness against sorcerers and adulterers; against those who swear falsely; against those who oppress the hired worker, the widow, and the fatherless; and against those who deny justice to the resident foreigner.  They do not fear me,’  says the Lord of Armies.


When you set him free, do not send him away empty-handed.


Look! The pay that you withheld from the workers  who mowed your fields cries out, and the outcry of the harvesters has reached the ears of the Lord of Armies.
