18 Then certain ones said, ‘Come, let’s make plans against Jeremiah,  for instruction will never be lost from the priest,  or counsel from the wise, or a word from the prophet.  Come, let’s denounce him  and pay no attention to all his words.’

Then someone reported to David, ‘Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.’ ‘Lord,’ David pleaded, ‘please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness! ’


Since the Lord had decreed  that Ahithophel’s good advice be undermined  in order to bring about Absalom’s ruin, Absalom and all the men of Israel said, ‘The advice of Hushai the Archite is better than Ahithophel’s advice.’


Then Zedekiah  son of Chenaanah came up, hit Micaiah on the cheek, and demanded, ‘Did  the Spirit of the Lord leave me to speak to you? ’


But they conspired against him and stoned him at the king’s command in the courtyard of the Lord’s temple.


He traps the wise in their craftiness so that the plans of the deceptive are quickly brought to an end.


Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.


The scoundrel’s weapons are destructive; he hatches plots to destroy the needy with lies, even when the poor person says what is right.


They will fight against you but never prevail over you,  since I am with you to rescue you.’  This is the Lord’s declaration.


for I was like a docile   lamb led to slaughter. I didn’t know that they had devised plots against me: ‘Let’s destroy the tree with its fruit; let’s cut him off from the land of the living so that his name will no longer be remembered.’


So now, say to the men of Judah and to the residents of Jerusalem, “This is what the Lord says: Look, I am about to bring harm to you and make plans against you. Turn now, each from your evil way, and correct your ways and your deeds.”


Pay attention to me, Lord. Hear what my opponents are saying!


The priests stopped asking, ‘Where is the  Lord? ’ The experts in the law no longer knew me, and the rulers  rebelled against me. The prophets prophesied by   Baal and followed useless idols.


For I have heard the gossip of many people, ‘Terror is on every side! Report him; let’s report him! ’ Everyone I trusted  watches for my fall. ‘Perhaps he will be deceived so that we might prevail against him and take our vengeance on him.’


Then the priests and prophets said to the officials and all the people, ‘This man deserves the death sentence because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears.’


But when he was at the Benjamin Gate,  an officer of the guard was there, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah, and he apprehended the prophet Jeremiah, saying, ‘You are defecting to the Chaldeans.’


then Azariah  son of Hoshaiah,  Johanan son of Kareah, and all the other arrogant men responded to Jeremiah, ‘You are speaking a lie! The Lord our God has not sent you to say, “You must not go to Egypt to stay there for a while! ”


‘As for the word you spoke to us in the name of the Lord, we are not going to listen to you!


Instead, we will do everything we promised:  we will burn incense to the queen of heaven  and offer drink offerings to her just as we, our ancestors, our kings, and our officials did in Judah’s cities  and in Jerusalem’s streets. Then we had enough food, we were well off, and we saw no disaster,


‘How can you claim, “We are wise; the law of the Lord is with us”? In fact, the lying pen of scribes has produced falsehood.


The slander  and murmuring of my opponents attack me all day long.


Disaster after disaster will come, and there will be rumour after rumour. Then they will look for a vision from a prophet, but instruction will perish from the priests and counsel from the elders.


and teach the Israelites all the statutes  that the Lord has given to them through Moses.’


Therefore, it will be night  for you – without visions; it will grow dark for you – without divination. The sun will set  on these prophets, and the daylight will turn black over them.


Then the seers will be ashamed and the diviners disappointed. They will all cover their mouths  , because there will be no answer from God.


For the lips of a priest should guard knowledge, and people should desire instruction from his mouth, because he is the messenger of the Lord of Armies.


One of the experts in the law  answered him, ‘Teacher, when you say these things you insult us too.’


Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things and asked him, ‘We aren’t blind too, are we? ’
