25 So he poured out his furious anger and the power of war on Jacob. It surrounded him with fire, but he did not know it; it burned him, but he didn’t take it to heart.

He burned the Lord’s temple,  the king’s palace,  and all the houses of Jerusalem; he burned down  all the great houses.


Pour out your raging anger; look on every proud person and humiliate him.


The Lord said: These people approach me with their speeches to honour me with lip-service, yet their hearts are far from me, and human rules direct their worship of me.


You said, “I will be the queen for ever.” You did not take these things to heart or think about their outcome.


You have never heard; you have never known; for a long time your ears have not been open. For I knew that you were very treacherous, and were known as a rebel from birth.


Therefore the Lord’s anger burned  against his people. He raised his hand against them and struck them; the mountains quaked, and their corpses were like rubbish in the streets. In all this, his anger has not turned away, and his hand is still raised to strike.


The righteous person perishes, and no one takes it to heart; the faithful are taken away, with no one realising that the righteous person is taken away because of   evil.


Who was it you dreaded and feared, so that you lied and didn’t remember me or take it to heart? I have kept silent for a long time, haven’t I?  , So you do not fear me.


The people did not turn to him who struck them; they did not seek the  Lord of Armies.


The land is scorched by the wrath of the  Lord of Armies, and the people are like fuel for the fire. No one has compassion on his brother.


They have made it a desolation. It mourns, desolate, before me. All the land is desolate, but no one takes it to heart.


Lord, don’t your eyes look for faithfulness? You have struck them, but they felt no pain. You finished them off, but they refused to accept discipline. They made their faces harder than rock, and they refused to return.


Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: ‘Look, my anger #– #my burning wrath #– #is about to be poured out on this place,  on people and animals, on the tree of the field, and on the produce of the land. My wrath will burn and not be quenched.’


He has cut off every horn  of Israel in his burning anger and withdrawn his right hand in the presence of the enemy. He has blazed against Jacob like a flaming fire that consumes everything.


He has strung his bow like an enemy; his right hand is positioned like an adversary. He has killed everyone who was the delight to the eye, pouring out his wrath like fire on the tent of Daughter Zion.


I will bring you from the peoples and gather you from the countries where you were scattered,  with a strong hand, an outstretched arm,  and outpoured wrath.


Foreigners consume his strength, but he does not notice. Even his hair is streaked with grey, but he does not notice.


Who can withstand his indignation? Who can endure his burning anger? His wrath is poured out like fire; even rocks are shattered before him.


If you don’t listen, and if you don’t take it to heart  to honour my name,’ says the Lord of Armies, ‘I will send a curse among you, and I will curse your blessings.  In fact, I have already begun to curse them because you are not taking it to heart.


For fire has been kindled because of my anger and burns to the depths of Sheol; it devours the land and its produce, and scorches the foundations of the mountains.
