‘As for you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father, and serve him wholeheartedly and with a willing mind,  for the Lord searches every heart and understands the intention of every thought.  If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you abandon him, he will reject you for ever.


And now Edom is still in rebellion against Judah’s control today. Libnah also rebelled at that time against his control because he had abandoned the Lord, the God of his ancestors.


He sacrificed to the gods of Damascus which had defeated him; he said, ‘Since the gods of the kings of Aram are helping them, I will sacrifice to them so that they will help me.’  But they were the downfall of him and of all Israel.

Oh sinful nation, people weighed down with iniquity, brood of evildoers, depraved children! They have abandoned  the  Lord; they have despised  the Holy One of Israel; they have turned their backs on him.


The earth staggers like a drunkard and sways like a hut. Earth’s rebellion weighs it down, and it falls, never to rise again.


this iniquity  of yours will be like a crumbling gap, a bulge in a high wall whose collapse will come in an instant #– #suddenly!


The sinners in Zion are afraid; trembling seizes the ungodly: ‘Who among us can dwell with a consuming fire? Who among us can dwell with ever-burning flames?   ’


This is what the Lord says: Where is your mother’s divorce certificate that I used to send her away? Or to which of my creditors did I sell you? Look, you were sold for your iniquities, and your mother was sent away because of your transgressions.


Look, all you who kindle a fire, who encircle yourselves with   torches; walk in the light of your fire and of the torches you have lit! This is what you’ll get from my hand: you will lie down in a place of torment.


They seek me day after day and delight to know my ways, like a nation that does what is right and does not abandon the justice of their God. They ask me for righteous judgements; they delight in the nearness of God.’


All of us have become like something unclean, and all our righteous acts are like a polluted   garment; all of us wither like a leaf, and our iniquities  carry us away like the wind.


But you who abandon the  Lord, who forget my holy mountain, who prepare a table for Fortune and fill bowls of mixed wine for Destiny,


‘Those who dedicate and purify themselves to enter the groves  following their leader,  eating meat from pigs, vermin,  and rats, will perish together.’ This is the  Lord’s declaration.


‘As they leave, they will see the dead bodies of those who have rebelled against me;  for their worm  will never die, their fire will never go out,  and they will be a horror to all humanity.’


Lord, the hope of Israel, all who abandon you will be put to shame. All who turn away from me will be written in the dirt, for they have abandoned the Lord, the fountain of living water.


And I will take away the remnant of Judah,  those who have set their face to go to the land of Egypt to stay there. All of them will meet their end in the land of Egypt. They will fall by the sword; they will meet their end by famine. From the least to the greatest,  they will die by the sword and by famine. Then they will become an example for cursing, scorn,  execration, and disgrace.


Let whoever is wise  understand these things, and whoever is insightful recognise them. For the ways of the  Lord are right, and the righteous walk in them, but the rebellious stumble in them.


When they say, ‘Peace and security’, then sudden destruction  will come upon them, like labour pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.


By the same word,  the present heavens and earth are stored up for fire, being kept for the day of judgement  and destruction of the ungodly.


But the cowards, faithless,  detestable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars   #– #their share will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulphur,  which is the second death.’


However, if you continue to do what is evil, both you and your king will be swept away.’
