For I strongly warned your ancestors when I brought them out of the land of Egypt until today, warning them time and time again,  , “Obey me.”


Say to the king and the queen mother: Take a humble seat, for your glorious crowns have fallen from your heads.


As I live – this is the King’s declaration; the Lord of Armies is his name   – the king of Babylon  will come like Tabor among the mountains and like Carmel by the sea.


So it will be done to you, Bethel, because of your extreme evil. At dawn the king of Israel will be totally destroyed.


I will attack them like a bear robbed of her cubs and tear open the rib cage over their hearts. I will devour them there like a lioness, like a wild beast that would rip them open.


Hear the word of the  Lord,  people of Israel, for the Lord has a case against the inhabitants of the land: There is no truth,  no faithful love, and no knowledge of God  in the land!


Like raiders who wait in ambush for someone, a band of priests murders on the road to Shechem. They commit atrocities.


Ephraim’s watchman is with my God. Yet the prophet encounters a bird trap on all his pathways. Hostility is in the house of his God!


Hear this,  you elders; listen, all you inhabitants of the land. Has anything like this ever happened in your days or in the days of your ancestors?


Listen to this message that the Lord has spoken against you, Israelites, against the entire clan that I brought from the land of Egypt:


Isaac’s high places  will be deserted, and Israel’s sanctuaries will be in ruins; I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with a sword.’


Then I said, ‘Now listen,  leaders of Jacob, you rulers of the house of Israel. Aren’t you supposed to know what is just?


Listen to this, leaders of the house of Jacob, you rulers of the house of Israel, who abhor justice and pervert everything that is right,


Faithful people have vanished from the land; there is no one upright among the people. All of them wait in ambush to shed blood; they hunt each other with a net.


‘A son honours his father, and a servant his master. But if I am a father, where is my honour? And if I am a master, where is your fear of me?  says the Lord of Armies to you priests, who despise my name.’ Yet you ask, ‘How have we despised your name? ’


‘Therefore, this decree  is for you priests:


It was reported to Sisera that Barak son of Abinoam had gone up Mount Tabor.


She summoned Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali and said to him, ‘Hasn’t the Lord, the God of Israel,  commanded you, “Go, deploy the troops on Mount Tabor,  and take with you ten thousand men from the Naphtalites  and Zebulunites?


Every year he would go on a circuit to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah and would judge Israel at all these locations.


Samuel said, ‘Gather all Israel at Mizpah,  and I will pray to the Lord on your behalf.’


When they gathered at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out in the Lord’s presence.  They fasted that day,  and there they confessed, ‘We have sinned against the Lord.’  And Samuel judged the Israelites at Mizpah.
