I will be his father, and he will be my son.  When he does wrong, I will discipline him with a rod of men and blows from mortals.


The one who will not use the rod hates his son, but the one who loves him disciplines him diligently.


Do not despise the  Lord’s instruction, my son, and do not loathe his discipline;


for the Lord disciplines the one he loves, just as a father disciplines the son in whom he delights.


Therefore Jacob’s iniquity  will be atoned for in this way, and the result of the removal of his sin will be this: when he makes all the altar stones like crushed bits of chalk, no Asherah poles or incense altars will remain standing.


Discipline me, Lord, but with justice – not in your anger, or you will reduce me to nothing.


Why should any living person complain, any man, because of the punishment for his sins?


Keep in mind that the Lord your God has been disciplining you just as a man disciplines his son.


Blessed is the one who endures trials, because when he has stood the test he will receive the crown  of life that God  has promised to those who love him.


See, we count as blessed those who have endured.  You have heard of Job’s endurance  and have seen the outcome that the Lord brought about #– #the Lord is compassionate and merciful.


As many as I love, I rebuke and discipline.   So be zealous and repent.


Naomi’s husband, Elimelech, died, and she was left with her two sons.
