4 I looked, and there was a whirlwind  coming from the north, a huge cloud with fire flashing back and forth and brilliant light all around it. In the centre of the fire, there was a gleam like amber.

Then he said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the Lord’s presence.’ At that moment, the Lord passed by.  A great and mighty wind  was tearing at the mountains and was shattering cliffs before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake,  but the Lord was not in the earthquake.


As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire with horses of fire  suddenly appeared and separated the two of them. Then Elijah went up into heaven in the whirlwind.


The trumpeters and singers joined together to praise and thank the Lord with one voice. They raised their voices, accompanied by trumpets, cymbals, and musical instruments,  in praise to the Lord: For he is good; his faithful love endures for ever. The temple, the Lord’s temple, was filled with a cloud.


Then the Lord answered Job from the whirlwind.  He said:


The hail, with lightning flashing through it, was so severe that nothing like it had occurred in the land of Egypt since it had become a nation.


A pronouncement  concerning Egypt: Look, the Lord rides on a swift cloud and is coming to Egypt. Egypt’s worthless idols will tremble before him, and Egypt will lose heart.


A pronouncement  concerning the desert by the sea: Like storms that pass over the Negev, it comes from the desert, from the land of terror.


Look, a storm from the  Lord! Wrath has gone out, a whirling storm. It will whirl about the heads of the wicked.


‘This is what the Lord of Armies says: Pay attention! Disaster spreads from nation to nation. A huge storm is stirred up from the ends of the earth.’


I am going to send for all the families of the north”   #– #this is the Lord’s declaration #– #”and send for my servant  Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and I will bring them against this land, against its residents, and against all these surrounding nations, and I will completely destroy them and make them an example of horror  and scorn, and ruins for ever.


Lift up a signal flag towards Zion. Run for cover! Don’t stand still! For I am bringing disaster from the north – a crushing blow.


‘Run for cover out of Jerusalem, Benjaminites. Sound the ram’s horn  in Tekoa; raise a smoke signal  over Beth-haccherem, for disaster threatens from the north, even a crushing blow.


From what seemed to be his waist up, I saw a gleam like amber, with what looked like fire enclosing it all round.  From what seemed to be his waist down, I also saw what looked like fire. There was a brilliant light all around him.


therefore, tell those plastering it with whitewash that it will fall. Torrential rain will come,  and I will send hailstones plunging  down, and a whirlwind will be released.


‘ “So this is what the Lord God says: I will release a whirlwind in my wrath. Torrential rain will come in my anger, and hailstones will fall in destructive fury.


The vision I saw  was like the one I had seen when he  came to destroy the city,  and like the ones I had seen by the Chebar Canal.  I fell face down.


I looked, and there was someone who looked like a man.  From what seemed to be his waist down was fire, and from his waist up was something that looked bright,  like the gleam of amber.


The one with the black horses is going to the land of the north, the white horses are going after them, but the dappled horses are going to the land of the south.’


for our God is a consuming fire.


His feet were like fine bronze as it is fired in a furnace,  and his voice like the sound of cascading  waters.
