Meanwhile, Moses was shepherding the flock of his father-in-law Jethro,  the priest of Midian. He led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb,  the mountain of God.


So all the people took off the gold rings that were on their ears and brought them to Aaron.


When the people heard this bad news, they mourned and didn’t put on their jewellery.


For the Lord said to Moses, ‘Tell the Israelites: You are a stiff-necked people. If I went up with you for a single moment, I would destroy you. Now take off your jewellery, and I will decide what to do with you.’


Now Moses took a tent and pitched it outside the camp, at a distance from the camp; he called it the tent of meeting. Anyone who wanted to consult the Lord would go to the tent of meeting that was outside the camp.


Your own evil will discipline you; your own apostasies will reprimand you. Recognise  how evil and bitter  it is for you to abandon the  Lord your God and to have no fear of me. This is the declaration of the Lord God of Armies.


Then the people of Nineveh believed God. They proclaimed a fast  and dressed in sackcloth #– #from the greatest of them to the least.
