But they would not listen. Instead they became obstinate like  their ancestors who did not believe the Lord their God.


When the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites, Hethites, Amorites, Hivites, and Jebusites,  which he swore to your ancestors that he would give you, a land flowing with milk and honey,  you must carry out this ceremony in this month.


Be attentive to him and listen to him. Do not defy him, because he will not forgive your acts of rebellion, for my name is in him.


And I have promised you that I will bring you up from the misery of Egypt  to the land of the Canaanites, Hethites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites #– #a land flowing with milk and honey.


and I have come down to rescue them from the power of the Egyptians and to bring them from that land to a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey   #– #the territory of the Canaanites, Hethites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.


So the Lord relented  concerning the disaster he had said he would bring on his people.


For the Lord said to Moses, ‘Tell the Israelites: You are a stiff-necked people. If I went up with you for a single moment, I would destroy you. Now take off your jewellery, and I will decide what to do with you.’


Then he said, ‘My Lord, if I have indeed found favour with you, my Lord, please go with us (even though this is a stiff-necked people), forgive our iniquity and our sin, and accept us as your own possession.’


Because I know that you are stubborn, and your neck is iron and your forehead bronze,


in order to establish the oath I swore to your ancestors,  to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is today.” ’ I answered, ‘Amen, Lord.’


On that day I swore  to them that I would bring them out  of the land of Egypt into a land I had searched out for them, a land flowing with milk and honey,  the most beautiful of all lands.


And I promised you: You will inherit their land, since I will give it to you to possess, a land flowing with milk and honey.  I am the Lord your God who set you apart from the peoples.


God saw their actions #– #that they had turned from their evil ways   #– #so God relented from the disaster  he had threatened them with. And he did not do it.


Jonah set out on the first day of his walk in the city and proclaimed,  ‘In forty days Nineveh will be demolished! ’


They reported to Moses, ‘We went into the land where you sent us. Indeed it is flowing with milk and honey,  and here is some of its fruit.


I will strike them with a plague and destroy them. Then I will make you into a greater and mightier nation than they are.’


If the Lord is pleased with us, he will bring us into this land, a land flowing with milk and honey,  and give it to us.


Is it not enough that you brought us up from a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness?  Do you also have to appoint yourself as ruler over us?


‘Separate yourselves from this community so I may consume them instantly.’


‘Get away from this community so that I may consume them instantly.’  But they fell face down.


‘You stiff-necked  people with uncircumcised hearts and ears!  You are always resisting the Holy Spirit. As your ancestors did, you do also.


For the Lord your God is a consuming fire,  a jealous God.


For the Israelites wandered in the wilderness for forty years until all the nation’s men of war who came out of Egypt had died off because they did not obey the Lord.  So the Lord vowed never to let them see the land he had sworn to their ancestors to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.


‘Therefore, this is the declaration of the Lord, the God of Israel: “I did say that your family and your forefather’s family would walk before me for ever.  But now,” this is the Lord’s declaration, “no longer! For those who honour me I will honour,  but those who despise me will be disgraced.
