1 On the third day,  Esther dressed in her royal clothing and stood in the inner courtyard  of the palace facing it. The king was sitting on his royal throne in the royal courtroom,  facing its entrance.

to bring Queen Vashti before him with her royal crown. He wanted to show off her beauty to the people and the officials, because she was very beautiful.


In the fortress of Susa, there was a Jewish man named Mordecai  son of Jair, son of Shimei,  son of Kish,  a Benjaminite.


‘All the royal officials and the people of the royal provinces know that one law applies to every man or woman who approaches the king in the inner courtyard  and who has not been summoned #– #the death penalty   #– # unless the king extends the gold sceptre, allowing that person to live.  I have not been summoned to appear before the king  for the last  thirty days.’


‘Go and assemble all the Jews who can be found in Susa and fast for me. Don’t eat or drink for three days,  night or day. I and my female servants will also fast  in the same way. After that, I will go to the king even if it is against the law.  If I perish, I perish.’


So Mordecai went and did everything Esther had commanded him.


The king asked, ‘Who is in the court? ’ Now Haman was just entering the outer court of the palace to ask the king to hang Mordecai on the gallows he had prepared for him.


Mordecai went from the king’s presence clothed in royal blue and white, with a great gold crown and a purple robe of fine linen.  The city of Susa shouted and rejoiced,


‘Look, I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.


What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothes? See, those who wear soft clothes are in royal palaces.


So give orders that the tomb be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples  may come, steal him, and tell the people, “He has been raised from the dead,” and the last deception will be worse than the first.’


so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom.   And you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.


‘To the one who conquers I will give the right to sit with me on my throne,   just as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.
