Ecclesiastes 8:14 - Christian Standard Bible Anglicised

14 There is a futility that is done on the earth: there are righteous people who get what the actions of the wicked deserve,  and there are wicked people who get what the actions of the righteous deserve.  I say that this too is futile.

King James Version (Oxford) 1769

14 There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.

14 Here also is a futility that goes on upon the earth: there are righteous men who fare as though they were wicked, and wicked men who fare as though they were righteous. I say that this also is vanity (emptiness, falsity, and futility)!

14 Here’s another thing that happens on earth that is pointless: the righteous get what the wicked deserve, and the wicked get what the righteous deserve. I say that this too is pointless.

14 There is also another vanity, which is done upon the earth. There are the just, to whom evils happen, as though they had done the works of the impious. And there are the impious, who are very secure, as though they possess the deeds of the just. But this, too, I judge to be a very great vanity.

14 There is also another vanity, which is done upon the earth. There are just men to whom evils happen, as though they had done the works of the wicked: and there are wicked men, who are as secure, as though they had the deeds of the just: but this also I judge most vain.

Ecclesiastes 8:14
16 Tagairtí Cros

Throughout all this Job did not sin or blame God for anything.  ,

Why do the wicked continue to live, growing old and becoming powerful?

All of you have seen this for yourselves, why do you keep up this empty talk?

There is an evil I have seen under the sun, an error proceeding from the presence of the ruler:

The wise person has eyes in his head, but the fool walks in darkness. Yet I also knew that one fate comes to them both.

I saw that all labour and all skilful work is due to one person’s jealousy of another.  This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.  ,

There is a person without a companion,  without even a son or brother, and though there is no end to all his struggles, his eyes are still not content with riches.  ‘Who am I struggling for,’ he asks, ‘and depriving myself of good things? ’ This too is futile and a miserable task.

In my futile life  I have seen everything:  someone righteous perishes in spite of his righteousness,  and someone wicked lives long in spite of his evil.

You will be righteous, Lord, even if I bring a case against you. Yet I wish to contend with you: Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why do all the treacherous live at ease?

So now we consider the arrogant  to be fortunate.  Not only do those who commit wickedness prosper, they even test God  and escape.’
