3 The Lord your God is the one who will cross ahead of you.  He will destroy these nations before you, and you will drive them out. Joshua is the one who will cross ahead of you, as the Lord has said.

Israel said to Joseph, ‘Look, I am about to die, but God will be with you and will bring you back to the land of your fathers.


Our ancestors in turn received it and with Joshua brought it in when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before them,  until the days of David.


The Lord your God who goes before you  will fight for you,  just as you saw him do for you in Egypt.


But commission Joshua and encourage and strengthen him, for he will cross over ahead of the people and enable them to inherit this land that you will see.”


The Lord said to Moses, ‘The time of your death is now approaching. Call Joshua and present yourselves at the tent of meeting so that I may commission him.’ When Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves at the tent of meeting,


The Lord commissioned Joshua son of Nun, ‘Be strong and courageous, for you will bring the Israelites into the land I swore to them, and I will be with you.’


The Lord will deal with them as he did Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites, and their land when he destroyed them.


Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom  because Moses had laid his hands on him.  So the Israelites obeyed him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses.


‘When the Lord your God brings you into the land  you are entering to possess,  and he drives out many nations before you #– #the Hethites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites, seven nations  more numerous and powerful than you   #– #


But understand that today the Lord your God will cross over ahead of you  as a consuming fire;  he will devastate and subdue them before you. You will drive them out and destroy them swiftly,  as the Lord has told you.


For if Joshua  had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.


‘Moses my servant is dead.  Now you and all the people prepare to cross over the Jordan  to the land I am giving the Israelites.


Just as the Lord had commanded his servant Moses, Moses commanded Joshua. That is what Joshua did, leaving nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.


The Lord spoke to Joshua: ‘Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel,  so they will know that I will be with you just as I was with Moses.


On that day the Lord exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel, and they revered him throughout his life, as they had revered Moses.
