At harvest, you are to give a fifth of it to Pharaoh,  and four-fifths will be yours as seed for the field and as food for yourselves, your households, and your dependents.’


So Joseph made it a law, still in effect today in the land of Egypt, that a fifth of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. Only the priests’ land does not belong to Pharaoh.


The one who despises his neighbour sins, but whoever shows kindness to the poor will be happy.


‘Every tenth of the land’s produce, grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord;  it is holy to the Lord.


For I have given them the tenth that the Israelites present to the Lord as a contribution for their inheritance. That is why I told them that they would not receive an inheritance among the Israelites.’


Rejoice during your festival #– #you, your son and daughter, your male and female slave, as well as the Levite, the resident foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow within your city gates.


The sons of Levi who receive the priestly office have a command according to the law to collect a tenth from the people   #– #that is, from their brothers and sisters #– #though they have also descended from Abraham.


And in a sense Levi himself, who receives a tenth, has paid a tenth through Abraham,
