I will stretch over Jerusalem the measuring line used on Samaria and the mason’s level used on the house of Ahab,  and I will wipe  Jerusalem clean as one wipes a bowl #– #wiping it and turning it upside down.


And I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the mason’s level.’ Hail will sweep away the false refuge, and water will flood your hiding place.


Eagle owls  and herons  will possess it, and long-eared owls and ravens will dwell there. The Lord will stretch out a measuring line and a plumb line  over her for her destruction and chaos.


You have left me.’ This is the  Lord’s declaration. ‘You have turned your back, so I have stretched out my hand against you and destroyed you. I am tired  of showing compassion.


The Lord determined to destroy the wall of Daughter Zion. He stretched out a measuring line and did not restrain himself from destroying. He made the ramparts and walls grieve; together they waste away.


She conceived again and gave birth to a daughter, and the Lord said to him: Name her Lo-ruhamah, for I will no longer have compassion on the house of Israel. I will certainly take them away.


He showed me this: The Lord was standing there by a vertical wall with a plumb line in his hand.


He asked me, ‘What do you see, Amos? ’ I replied, ‘A basket of summer fruit.’  , The Lord said to me, ‘The end has come for my people Israel;  I will no longer spare them.


Who is a God like you, forgiving iniquity and passing over rebellion for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not hold on to his anger for ever because he delights in faithful love.


For who despises the day of small things?  These seven eyes of the Lord, which scan throughout the whole earth, will rejoice when they see the ceremonial stone  in Zerubbabel’s hand.’


He asked me, ‘What do you see? ’ I replied, ‘I see a solid gold lampstand with a bowl at the top. The lampstand also has seven lamps at the top with seven spouts for each of  the lamps.


‘What do you see? ’ he asked me. ‘I see a flying scroll,’ I replied, ‘nine metres  long and four and a half metres  wide.’
