He even tore down the altar at Bethel  and the high place  that had been made by Jeroboam son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin. He burned the high place, crushed it to dust, and burned the Asherah.


When all this was completed, all Israel who had attended went out to the cities of Judah and broke up the sacred pillars, chopped down the Asherah poles, and tore down the high places and altars  throughout Judah and Benjamin, as well as in Ephraim and Manasseh, to the last one.  Then all the Israelites returned to their cities, each to his own possession.


Now go, lead the people to the place I told you about; see, my angel will go before you. But on the day I settle accounts, I will hold them accountable for their sin.’


They stretch out beside every altar on garments taken as collateral, and in the house of their God they drink wine obtained through fines.


Come to Bethel and rebel; rebel even more at Gilgal! Bring your sacrifices every morning, your tenths every three days.


Amaziah the priest  of Bethel sent word to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying, ‘Amos has conspired against you  right here in the house of Israel. The land cannot endure all his words,


but don’t ever prophesy  at Bethel again, for it is the king’s sanctuary  and a royal temple.’


Isaac’s high places  will be deserted, and Israel’s sanctuaries will be in ruins; I will rise up against the house of Jeroboam with a sword.’


I saw the Lord standing beside the altar,  and he said: Strike the capitals of the pillars so that the thresholds shake; knock them down on the heads of all the people. Then I will kill the rest of them with the sword. None of those who flee will get away; none of the fugitives will escape.
