8 Abner was very angry about Ish-bosheth’s accusation. ‘Am I a dog’s head  , who belongs to Judah? ’ he asked. ‘All this time I’ve been loyal to the family of your father Saul, to his brothers, and to his friends and haven’t betrayed you to David, but now you accuse me of wrongdoing with this woman!

Then Abishai son of Zeruiah said to the king, ‘Why should this dead dog  curse my lord the king?  Let me go over and remove his head! ’


Abner son of Ner, commander of Saul’s army,  took Saul’s son Ish-bosheth  , and moved him to Mahanaim.


Now take action, because the Lord has spoken concerning David: “Through my servant David I will save my people Israel from the power of the Philistines and the power of all Israel’s enemies.” ’


May God punish Abner and do so severely if I don’t do for David what the Lord swore to him:


Even while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led us out to battle and brought us back.  The Lord also said to you, “You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will be ruler over Israel.” ’


Mephibosheth paid homage and said, ‘What is your servant that you take an interest in a dead dog  like me? ’


Hazael said, ‘How could your servant, a mere dog,  do such a mighty deed? ’ Elisha answered, ‘The Lord has shown me that you will be king over Aram.’


Who is it you have mocked  and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy One of Israel!


Do not bring a female prostitute’s wages or a male prostitute’s  earnings into the house of the Lord your God to fulfil any vow, because both are detestable to the Lord your God.


Samuel said to him, ‘The Lord has torn the kingship of Israel away from you today  and has given it to your neighbour who is better than you.


He said to David, ‘Am I a dog  that you come against me with sticks? ’  Then he cursed David by his gods.
