The king said to Ziba, ‘All that belongs to Mephibosheth is now yours! ’ ‘I bow before you,’ Ziba said. ‘May I find favour with you, my lord the king! ’


When he came from Jerusalem to meet the king, the king asked him, ‘Mephibosheth, why didn’t you come with me? ’


Saul’s son Jonathan had a son whose feet were crippled. He was five years old when the report about Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel. His nanny picked him up and fled, but as she was hurrying to flee, he fell and became lame. His name was Mephibosheth.


David asked, ‘Is there anyone remaining from the family of Saul I can show kindness  to for Jonathan’s sake? ’


You, your sons, and your servants are to work the ground for him, and you are to bring in the crops so your master’s grandson will have food to eat. But Mephibosheth, your master’s grandson, is always to eat at my table.’ Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.


Mephibosheth son of Jonathan son of Saul came to David, fell face down, and paid homage. David said, ‘Mephibosheth! ’ ‘I am your servant,’ he replied.


‘Don’t be afraid,’ David said to him, ‘since I intend to show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all your grandfather Saul’s fields, and you will always eat meals at my table.’


Keep  the king’s command because of your oath made before God.


Jonathan made a covenant with David  because he loved him as much as himself.


‘By the Lord, the God of Israel, I will sound out my father by this time tomorrow or the next day. If I find out that he is favourable towards you, will I not send for you and tell you?


don’t ever withdraw your kindness from my household #– #not even when the Lord cuts off every one of David’s enemies from the face of the earth.’


Jonathan once again swore to David  in his love for him, because he loved him as he loved himself.


Jonathan then said to David, ‘Go in the assurance the two of us pledged in the name of the Lord when we said, “The Lord will be a witness between you and me and between my offspring and your offspring for ever.” ’  Then David left, and Jonathan went into the city.


Deal kindly with  your servant, for you have brought me into a covenant with you before the Lord.  If I have done anything wrong,  then kill me yourself; why take me to your father? ’


Then the two of them made a covenant in the Lord’s presence.  Afterwards, David remained in Horesh, while Jonathan went home.


So David swore to Saul. Then Saul went back home, and David and his men went up to the stronghold.
