The Philistines  fought against Israel, and Israel’s men fled from them. Many were killed on Mount Gilboa.


The next day when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his sons dead on Mount Gilboa.


Your neck is like the tower of David, constructed in layers. A thousand shields are hung on it – all of them shields of warriors.


Prepare a table,  and spread out a carpet! Eat and drink! Rise up, you princes, and oil the shields!


I will make it a wasteland. It will not be pruned or weeded; thorns and briars will grow up. I will also give orders to the clouds that rain should not fall on it.


‘ “This is what the Lord God says: I caused grieving on the day that the cedar went down to Sheol.  I closed off the underground deep because of it:  I held back the rivers of the deep, and its abundant water was restrained. I made Lebanon mourn on account of it, and all the trees of the field fainted because of it.


Grain and drink offerings have been cut off from the house of the  Lord; the priests, who are ministers of the  Lord, mourn.


Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave a blessing behind him, so that you can offer a grain offering and a drink offering to the Lord your God.


‘Curse Meroz,’ says the angel of the  Lord, ‘Bitterly curse her inhabitants, for they did not come to help the  Lord, to help the Lord with the warriors.’


Samuel took the flask of oil,  poured it out on Saul’s head,  kissed him, and said, ‘Hasn’t the Lord anointed you  ruler over his inheritance?  ,
