At the time for offering the evening sacrifice,  the prophet Elijah approached the altar and said, ‘Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel,  today let it be known  that you are God in Israel and I am your servant, and that at your word I have done all these things.


King Pul  , of Assyria invaded the land, so Menahem gave Pul 35 tonnes  of silver so that Pul would support him to strengthen his grasp on the kingdom.

Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our ancestors, keep this desire for ever in the thoughts of the hearts of your people, and confirm their hearts towards you.


So the God of Israel roused the spirit of King Pul  (that is, Tiglath-pileser  ) of Assyria, and he took the Reubenites, Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh into exile. He took them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and Gozan’s river, where they are until today.


Then King Tiglath-pileser  , of Assyria came against Ahaz; he oppressed him and did not give him support.


Letters were sent by couriers  to each of the royal provinces telling the officials to destroy, kill, and annihilate all the Jewish people #– #young and old, women and children #– #and plunder their possessions on a single day,  the thirteenth day of Adar, the twelfth month.


The couriers rode out in haste on their royal horses at the king’s urgent command. The law was also issued in the fortress of Susa.


My days fly by faster than a runner;  , they flee without seeing any good.


If the Lord of Armies had not left us a few survivors, we would be like Sodom, we would resemble Gomorrah.


Though a tenth will remain in the land, it will be burned again. Like the terebinth or the oak that leaves a stump when felled, the holy seed  is the stump.


This is the text of the letter  that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the remaining exiled elders, the priests, the prophets, and all the people Nebuchadnezzar  had deported from Jerusalem to Babylon.


‘ “Return, you faithless children   #– #this is the Lord’s declaration #– #for I am your master,  , and I will take you,  one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion.


If you return,  Israel – this is the  Lord’s declaration – you will return to me, if you remove your abhorrent idols from my presence and do not waver,


Messenger races to meet messenger, and herald to meet herald, to announce to the king of Babylon that his city has been captured from end to end.


Let’s examine and probe our ways, and turn back to the  Lord.


Lord, bring us back to yourself, so that we may return; renew our days as in former times,


Tell them, “As I live #– #this is the declaration of the Lord God  #– #I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked person should turn from his way and live.  Repent, repent of your evil ways! Why will you die, house of Israel? ”


Israel, return to the Lord your God, for you have stumbled in your iniquity.


Come, let’s return to the  Lord. For he has torn us, and he will heal us; he has wounded us, and he will bind up our wounds.


So tell the people, “This is what the Lord of Armies says: Return to me #– #this is the declaration of the Lord of Armies #– #and I will return to you, says the Lord of Armies.


Do not be like your ancestors;  the earlier prophets proclaimed to them:  This is what the Lord of Armies says: Turn from your evil ways and your evil deeds.  But they did not listen or pay attention to me #– #this is the Lord’s declaration.


Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
