Then the Lord said to me, ‘Even if Moses and Samuel  should stand before me,  my heart would not go out to these people. Send them from my presence, and let them go.


‘When an ox, sheep, or goat is born, it is to remain with  its mother for seven days; from the eighth day  on, it will be acceptable as an offering, a food offering to the Lord.


I prayed to the Lord: Lord God, do not annihilate your people, your inheritance, whom you redeemed  through your greatness and brought out of Egypt with a strong hand.


Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect.


Build a well-constructed altar to the Lord your God on the top of this mound.  Take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah pole you cut down.’


When the men of the city got up in the morning, they found Baal’s altar torn down, the Asherah pole beside it cut down, and the second bull offered up on the altar that had been built.


Afterwards, go ahead of me to Gilgal. I will come to you to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice fellowship offerings. Wait seven days until I come to you and show you what to do.’


Isn’t the wheat harvest today?  I will call on the Lord, and he will send thunder and rain so that you will recognise what an immense evil you committed in the Lord’s sight by requesting a king for yourselves.’


Samuel asked, ‘How can I go? Saul will hear about it and kill me! ’ The Lord answered, ‘Take a young cow with you and say, “I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.”


‘ “Then I will raise up a faithful priest  for myself. He will do whatever is in my heart and mind. I will establish a lasting dynasty for him,  and he will walk before my anointed one for all time.


Then he would return to Ramah  because his home was there, he judged Israel there, and he built an altar to the Lord there.


The women answered, ‘Yes, he is ahead of you. Hurry, he only just entered the city, because there’s a sacrifice  for the people at the high place  today.
