Say to the cowardly: ‘Be strong; do not fear! Here is your God; vengeance is coming. God’s retribution is coming; he will save you.’


Say to him: Calm down and be quiet. Don’t be afraid or cowardly  because of these two smouldering sticks, the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram, and the son of Remaliah.


Then Caleb  quietened the people in the presence of Moses and said, ‘Let’s go up now and take possession of the land because we can certainly conquer it! ’


Only don’t rebel against the Lord, and don’t be afraid of the people of the land, for we will devour them.  Their protection  has been removed from them, and the Lord is with us. Don’t be afraid of them! ’


Therefore, strengthen your tired hands and weakened knees,


Now give me this hill country the Lord promised me on that day, because you heard then that the Anakim are there,  as well as large fortified cities.  Perhaps the Lord will be with me and I will drive them out as the Lord promised.’


Jonathan said to the attendant who carried his weapons, ‘Come on, let’s cross over to the garrison of these uncircumcised men.  Perhaps the Lord will help us. Nothing can keep the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few.’


One of the young men answered, ‘I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is also a valiant man,  a warrior, eloquent, handsome, and the Lord is with him.’


What David said was overheard and reported to Saul, so he had David brought to him.
