When your people Israel are defeated before an enemy, because they have sinned against you, and they return to you and praise your name, and they pray and plead with you for mercy in this temple,


and when they come to their senses in the land where they were deported and repent and petition you in their captors’ land, saying, ‘We have sinned and done wrong; we have been wicked,’


Those of Israelite descent separated themselves from all foreigners,  and they stood  and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their ancestors.


Then you will remember your ways  and be ashamed when you  receive your elder and younger sisters. I will give them to you as daughters, but not because of your covenant.


so that when I make atonement for all you have done, you will remember and be ashamed,  and never open your mouth again because of your disgrace.  This is the declaration of the Lord God.” ’


He will certainly live because he thought it over and turned from all the transgressions he had committed; he will not die.


The Lord of Armies says this: ‘Think carefully about your ways.


Though I sow  them among the nations, they will remember  me in the distant lands; they and their children will live and return.


‘Then I will pour out a spirit  , of grace and prayer on the house of David and the residents of Jerusalem, and they will look at  me whom they pierced. They will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child and weep bitterly for him as one weeps for a firstborn.


When they gathered at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out in the Lord’s presence.  They fasted that day,  and there they confessed, ‘We have sinned against the Lord.’  And Samuel judged the Israelites at Mizpah.
