Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak.


Then he said to Jacob, ‘Let me go, for it is daybreak.’ But Jacob said, ‘I will not let you go unless you bless me.’


‘Your name will no longer be Jacob,’  he said. ‘It will be Israel  because you have struggled with God  and with men and have prevailed.’


so that your name will be exalted for ever, when it is said, ‘The Lord of Armies is God over Israel.’ The house of your servant David  will be established before you


Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord.  The God who answers with fire, he is God.’ All the people answered, ‘That’s fine.’


All afternoon they kept on raving until the offering of the evening sacrifice,  but there was no sound; no one answered, no one paid attention.


At the time for offering the evening sacrifice,  the prophet Elijah approached the altar and said, ‘Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel,  today let it be known  that you are God in Israel and I am your servant, and that at your word I have done all these things.


Then the Lord’s fire fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench.


Then the man of God  approached and said to the king of Israel, ‘This is what the Lord says: “Because the Arameans have said, ‘The Lord is a god of the mountains and not a god of the valleys,’  I will hand over all this whole huge army to you. Then you will know that I am the Lord.” ’


Now, Lord our God, please save us from his power so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, Lord, are God #– #you alone.


Then Asa cried out to the Lord his God,  ‘Lord, there is no one besides you to help the mighty and those without strength. Help us, Lord our God, for we depend on you,  and in your name we have come against this large army. Lord, you are our God. Do not let a mere mortal hinder you.’


I tell you, even though he won’t get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his friend’s shameless boldness,   he will get up and give him as much as he needs.


Today, the Lord will hand you over to me. Today, I’ll strike you down, remove your head, and give the corpses  of the Philistine camp to the birds of the sky and the wild creatures of the earth. Then all the world will know that Israel has a God,
