At noon Elijah mocked them. He said, ‘Shout loudly, for he’s a god! Maybe he’s thinking it over; maybe he has wandered away;  or maybe he’s on the road. Perhaps he’s sleeping and will wake up! ’


He makes a god or his idol with the rest of it. He bows down to it and worships; he prays to it,  ‘Save me, for you are my god.’


Baldness  is coming to Gaza; Ashkelon will become silent. Remnant of their valley, how long will you gash yourself?


You are not to make gashes on your bodies for the dead  or put tattoo marks on yourselves; I am the Lord.


Would the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams or with ten thousand streams of oil? Should I give my firstborn for my transgression, the offspring of my body for my own sin?


If someone asks him, “What are these wounds  on your chest?”   #– #then he will answer, “I received the wounds in the house of my friends.”


Night  and day among the tombs  and on the mountains,  he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.


‘And many times it has thrown him into fire or water to destroy  him. But if you can do anything, have compassion  on us and help us.’


‘You are sons of the Lord your God;  do not cut yourselves or make a bald spot on your head  on behalf of the dead,
