Then Sarai said to Abram, ‘You are responsible for my suffering!  I put my slave in your arms,  and when she saw that she was pregnant, I became contemptible to her. May the Lord judge between me and you.’


but the poor man had nothing except one small ewe lamb that he had bought. He raised her, and she grew up with him and with his children. From his meagre food she would eat, from his cup she would drink, and in his arms she would sleep. She was like a daughter to him.


Now King David was old and advanced in age.  Although they covered him with bedclothes, he could not get warm.


They searched for a beautiful girl throughout the territory of Israel; they found Abishag  the Shunammite  , and brought her to the king.


My sons, don’t be negligent now, for the Lord has chosen you to stand in his presence, to serve him, and to be his ministers and burners of incense.’


The king’s personal attendants suggested, ‘Let a search be made for beautiful young virgins for the king.


Also, if two lie down together, they can keep warm; but how can one person alone keep warm?


Do not rely on a friend; don’t trust in a close companion. Seal your mouth from the woman who lies in your arms.


‘At that time the Lord set apart the tribe of Levi  to carry the ark of the Lord’s covenant, to stand before the Lord to serve him, and to pronounce blessings in his name, as it is today.


‘If your brother, the son of your mother,  or your son or daughter, or the wife you embrace, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, “Let’s go and worship other gods” #– #which neither you nor your ancestors have known,
